It's getting generally really good reviews? Is the playerbase small?

Reviews by whom? The players, or journo? Hint, journo usually rate opposite of players. If IGN gives terrible score, the game is a banger, for example.

I fall in to the camp that is not aloud to even play it because they locked out Linux and steam deck from even running it.

It has gone from 80k players online at release one month ago to 20k players currently online. That number falls every day. Bungie spent $200 million developing Marathon and Sony spent over $3 BILLION acquiring Bungie. Financially speaking, it has been a resounding flop.

If you look at the Steam chart player numbers, it has been going downhill like a bad stock company that's in massive debt. And that's just Steam numbers.
.
I can't imagine how low the player numbers are on Playstation, where you must pay a fee to play online. It's so outdated a thing; especially when these live-service games are falling out of favor, that Sony doesn't remove all barriers of entry and friction for players to join.
.
The remaining players are try-hard git gud folks that will trash talk you with prox chat. No amount of money would get me to get involved in such a terrible, dwindling experience. You have been warned; please research the current state of the game before spending your money, and time on this.

The player base has been shrinking since it released.

One of the big problems of modern day gaming right here.
Hasn't played the game yet has a lengthy negative review advising people against it🙃.

The more practical thing in my opinion; if this game appeals to you at all, purchase it on steam and try it out. If you don't like it, refund it within the first 2 hours of gameplay. Make a decision for yourself.
