There is under 8lb of actual seed in this 16lb bag. The fertilizer included is 2-0-0 per one amazon review photo, which is essentially worthless.

Seeding cool season grass in spring is generally a bad idea, but if you must, just buy a 7lb bag of black beauty seed (a WAY better seed than Scott's) and pick up some cheap 10-10-10 garden fertilizer from any home store for roughly the same price as this deal. Or spend a little more and get actual starter lawn fertilizer with meso. You'll have much better results, as long as you keep the seed moist/damp for about two weeks. On my walks around the neighborhood, I notice a bunch of folks trying to seed bare patches in their lawns - which is the type of seeding that should be done in spring. The problem is that most neglect to water the seed, so results end up being poor.

pretty much anything you can get at a box store is going to be mediocre (at best) seed with weed seeds in it. I get all my seed from Twin city seed or similar dealer. You get pure blue tag (weed free) and better genetics. I also avoid "sun and shade" type mixes. It's a Jack of all trades, master of none kind of a thing. Why buy seed where half the bag is going to struggle when you can just get the appropriate seed for the area you're seeding?

Second this. I have a local hardware store that sells a special mix specifically for my town. I'm sure this is the case for other towns. Generic mixes will require twice the seeding.

Stay away from coated seed, it simply does not germinate as well. Also avoid the scam of soil conditioners, it's just a way to give you less seed. Like other said big box seed can't compare to proper local mixes without all the BS in it. I'll second Black Beauty.
