the 288v also has a 100% srgb 400 nit screen.
Acer certified refurb laptops marketed as "pristine, like-new condition" are practically new, based on my past experience.
They usually use a different language like "very good" or "slight wear and tear" for laptops that are in worse refurb condition. Example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/277798090257

This Acer Aspire 14 AI certified refurb stands out as a lightweight 14 inch laptop with a 1TB SSD, 16GB of RAM, and a fast Ultra 5 chip that feels basically new in use. The certified refurb grading is repeatedly described as pristine or like new, with battery health showing 100 percent in multiple reports. The screen is the main tradeoff, with the Ultra 5 panel described as around 65 percent sRGB and 300 nits, while the 2 year warranty helps offset concerns about display issues. Heavy preinstalled software is another annoyance, and a dented arrival shows condition can still vary.
Certified refurb units can arrive in like-new or pristine condition with strong battery health reported after checking with Acer.
The 226V configuration can include a 100% sRGB 400 nits touchscreen that matches a 400 nits desktop monitor.
A 2-year warranty can cover screen concerns, which helps reduce risk for the most alarming review topics.
The laptop can feel smooth for light gaming at 60Hz and can avoid reported screen blackout issues across multiple purchased units.
A Wells Fargo credit card offer can add extra 2% cash back on eBay purchases up to a $10 maximum.
Pre-installed Acer, Microsoft, and McAfee software can be heavy enough to require removal tools for privacy and cleanup.
The coupon price and terms can change, and the 288V model price can increase by about $20.
Some units can arrive with cosmetic damage, including a large dent at the bottom.
WiFi and keyboard setup can take longer than expected, with delays reported around 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Would this one be a good option for a college student? It doesn't need to be a gaming machine, though I guess light gaming wouldn't be bad. The only downside I'm noticing is the screen, but at this price point, compromises have to be made somewhere. Is this the place to make it versus getting something that might have a better screen but also has 16GB RAM instead of 32GB and might also have a slightly worse CPU?

Doesn't the $350 one have the same screen?

The screen has VFR which makes it ever so slightly better than the standard cheap display most low end laptops have. Even though it's only a 60hz screen, it feels very smooth when playing games. Windows 11 Home had like twice the amount of preloaded apps and games that I typically see on new installs.
Overall, this laptop is fairly solid for a newer gen laptop with 16gb of RAM and a 1TB SSD.
Other than that, is it just the CPU that differs?
It seems like the two chips are actually pretty similar from a CPU perspective, both 4 P-cores + 4 E-cores, with the Ultra 9 having higher clocks and larger L3 cache, giving it about a 10% performace edge in passmark. Not all that much considering the price difference.
But the Ultra 9 has a better NPU and GPU on the chip. Not sure what is using NPUs but the faster on-chip GPU of the Ultra 9 (Arc 140V versus Arc 130V) would make it better for light gaming. Does the faster NPU on the Ultra 9 have any real-world benefit for the average user?
