Just a note the 288v was 20$ more the other day, they raised the price for the coupon. Still a great price, I bought it at the 650. Just a shady practice.

the 288v also has a 100% srgb 400 nit screen.

Thanks. Ordered one. 1TB SSD + "Ultra 5" series lunar lake is a steal at this price.
Acer certified refurb laptops marketed as "pristine, like-new condition" are practically new, based on my past experience.

They usually use a different language like "very good" or "slight wear and tear" for laptops that are in worse refurb condition. Example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/277798090257

Is 14" inch the new standard? I think it's too small

Would this one be a good option for a college student? It doesn't need to be a gaming machine, though I guess light gaming wouldn't be bad. The only downside I'm noticing is the screen, but at this price point, compromises have to be made somewhere. Is this the place to make it versus getting something that might have a better screen but also has 16GB RAM instead of 32GB and might also have a slightly worse CPU?

Same laptop for $298 (has been for months), only difference is "Very Good Refurb" vs Certified Refurb: https://www.ebay.com/itm/277168045226A steal for that price, it's just never in stock.
It's never in stock though lately... I've been watching for 3 weeks

I wouldn't do the $600 one given the screen, the $350 one seems very competitive though

Yeah I've been watching since December, it's been in stock a few times in the last month but only like 6 units. I keep track of the sold number.

Doesn't the $350 one have the same screen?

I'd prefer something with better specs than what the $355 laptop has. Do you happen to have any recommendations for what might be a good option in the $600 - $800 range?

I purchased 15 of these. I have not experienced the screen blackout issue listed on the Costco reviews. When setting up, it did take a while for WiFi to connect and for the keyboard to work. I had to wait like 30 seconds to 1 minute for WiFi and the keyboard to work. It happened to all 15 laptops.
The screen has VFR which makes it ever so slightly better than the standard cheap display most low end laptops have. Even though it's only a 60hz screen, it feels very smooth when playing games. Windows 11 Home had like twice the amount of preloaded apps and games that I typically see on new installs.
Overall, this laptop is fairly solid for a newer gen laptop with 16gb of RAM and a 1TB SSD.

$273 more for the Ultra 9 model seems like a lot, though RAM is crazy expensive nowadays and it comes with 32GB vs 16GB in the Ultra 5 model.

Other than that, is it just the CPU that differs?

It seems like the two chips are actually pretty similar from a CPU perspective, both 4 P-cores + 4 E-cores, with the Ultra 9 having higher clocks and larger L3 cache, giving it about a 10% performace edge in passmark. Not all that much considering the price difference.

But the Ultra 9 has a better NPU and GPU on the chip. Not sure what is using NPUs but the faster on-chip GPU of the Ultra 9 (Arc 140V versus Arc 130V) would make it better for light gaming. Does the faster NPU on the Ultra 9 have any real-world benefit for the average user?

the screen on the 9 ultra 9 is 100% srgb color and 400 nits, the the ultra 5 is about 65% and 300 nits. So the 9 has better color and brightness. As of now, for normal users, no the faster NPU wont do anything . Remember though the RAM isn't upgrade-able on almost any laptops anymore. So if you get 16, you are stuck with it.
