Forgive a noob for a dumb question. Do I still have a free copy once the game is no longer early release? Thinking they give this free so we'll do some free beta testing for them?

Correct, they are probably trying to drive players, reviews, or 'beta testing' like you alluded to. Harmless to grab the game now and it might become something cool later.

Both marketing and 'testing'. It's not uncommon. Valheim has been in 'Early Release' for five years and has sold millions of copies. (Although I'm not sure it was ever free. It was 1/2 price a while.)
Reviews are bad, and the game's description was definitely written by AI ("you are not just ___, you are ___"). But like others have said, might as well grab it on the off chance it gets finished and turns out well.

You will keep the game.
Valheim was free when it was a browser game on itch.io.

How does one find these in Epic's store? Just browse their free section randomly? I only ever see the one or two free game rotation on their front page.
