I know nothing about baseball gloves but thought it would be fun to play catch with my kids and wife. Is this glove worthy of that? If not, what should I get?

I'm just trying to play catch with my elementary school kids. Used gloves at play it again sports are like $60+, sometimes double that.

I don't need an heirloom. Can I really use this without break in?

break in is just more comfortable. You just gonna have to be thoughtful enough to squeeze harder.
i've used a cheapo glove like this for weekend softball leagues. You CAN get away with it, but it will just get beat up quicker. strings break ect.

I had Rawling from Walmart to catch with my son and lasted for almost 4 years... he is now 12 and I can't catch his ball with the thin leather.... I will be happy if this can last 1 year until I retire playing catch....

breaking in a new glove is always fun, lottsa oil and bashing it with a bat so it will flex. Ahh, the good old days....

Are fake leather gloves decent these days? When I was a kid, the fake leather ones were below the threshold of 'good enough' but I am sure things could have changed. The leather glove I bought for just playing catch was entry level Rawlings and has held up for a few decades now.

I'd check something like this out for $40 if you want a leather glove without spending more than you have to.

If you plan to use it for more than just one year, I wouldn't bother with any synthetic leather, it will definitely break down on you. Personally I think it is worth it to get the cheapest "all leather shell" type glove you can find, but I also understand investing even $40 or $50 into a glove you use only a handful of times might not be worth it to everyone.

I have a version of this glove, and upgraded as soon as my kid moved from T-Ball to a higher level. Even a sueded"fake leather" glove would feel way better than this thing, it is complete "plastic," i.e. vinyl-type leather and the interior padding made my hand quite hot.
I upgraded to a Wilson A1000 (got it at 50% off for $100), so I invested some money (I now have two boys who play baseball, so I'll have it for quite some time, which justified my purchase), but if you're gonna use this for more than a very brief period, I'd consider investing into the next level up, i.e. $40-70.

Agree with others that although this looks significantly better than most "synthetic leather" options (read: vinyl) you'd be much better off spending 2–4x on a real leather glove if you're going to use it more than once or twice.
