Mostly to lower chair costs, but probably also to avoid lawsuits. I bought a set of these roller wheels for my office chair and they're great, just they are also soooo easy to roll. For the first year, I couldn't push back without the chair trying to roll across the room. Years later, they still roll like butter.

If these shipped on new chairs, clumsy people would hurt themselves fast and and frequently, then file frivolous lawsuits.

I forgot to mention the height of the casters. I purchased 3 inch (your post is 2 inch). So that would explain some of the price difference. Measure the height of your current wheels and try to match them. Sometimes the adjustable gas cylinder of the chair may be closer to the floor and if you get shorter wheels, it will drag on the floor.

can you even access the bearings on these type of casters? I would use a spray lubricant instead. Blaster, WD-40 Specialist (regular WD-40 is not really meant for lubricating), or super lube lubricant sprays would work.. Even using something less viscous than grease like lubricating oil might work better.
Chair casters aren't really critical so you can get away with using some cheap super tech lubricant spray, they're like 2 dollars for a small can, which is more than enough.

The wheel doesn't necessarily need to break; oftentimes things (e.g., hair) will get bound up around the wheel's axle to the point you'd have to break the wheel just to get the junk out of it (because they're not meant to be repaired). This is probably one of the least expensive, highest-return upgrades you can do for a chair.

Twice the price but I have found these superior as they have three sets of SEALED bearings. Look at the top of the caster, if you see exposed ball bearings they will eventually fall apart. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V3HM...asin_title

I have wheels like these on my Herman Miller at my home. I bought them because the piston for seat height would drag on my carpet, not an issue with a buildings carpet.At any rate I'm always barefoot and will often pull my feet in and set them on the legs and occasionally on the wheels. It's happened once or twice and you can definitely pinch a toe with these vs the normal wheels.

Working from home and often barefoot I have definitely pinched a toe once or twice using these types of wheels.
