Wouldn't the screw need to be at least partially unscrewed for this to work?

Thanks for the link to the pliers. I recently tried to use 2 different sets of "Screw extractors" (Not the set posted here) on SS screws that were recessed in a sprinkler valve cover with horrible results. Had to eventually use an angle grinder to cut through a section of the valve top and release the damaged screws. Pliers would not have helped in my case (recessed screws) but they would be good to have around in the toolbox.

Ive had a pair of vampliers on my wishlist, at 10$ I feel I can justify buying these to keep in a drawer

This THOSAF set I bought this like a year ago for $9. It worked for me when I screwed up and rounded a screw.

I think in situation like that, you usually have to try different solution, as it's highly dependent on the situation.
