- Swap cards work by taking you to a website hosted by one of the major gift card companies (i.e. giftcards.com [giftcards.com]); you then pick the brand or brands, plus amounts, that you want to redeem for, and those redemptions will result in actual gift cards from that merchant getting sent to your email.
- Electronic swap cards will have numbers and a PIN like most gift cards, but those numbers and PIN can't be redeemed at those merchants. You have to swap the card for one of the merchant brands first, which will produce merchant-specific gift cards that can be used at those merchants.
- Once you get the card swapped for actual merchant gift cards, they're still electronic-only, but you can use them both in-store or online. They'll usually come with a scannable barcode on the webpage where the gift card's number and PIN are given to you. Most merchants' gift card pages will outright include instructions for the cashier on how to enter them into the register alongside instructions for you on how to use them in-store.

Staples is offering 15 percent off a wide mix of eGift cards, including standalone brands like Lowe's, Ulta Beauty, eBay, Chipotle, DoorDash, and BJ's, plus swap cards for retailers and travel brands such as IKEA, Macy's, REI, Southwest, and The Cheesecake Factory. The swap cards can be split across multiple brands and amounts, and the resulting merchant cards are sent by email for in store or online use. Lowe's cards reportedly arrive quickly, while eBay electronic cards now use a longer alphanumeric code that is harder to guess. Chipotle is out of stock, DoorDash pricing has been inconsistent in cart, and the promotion is not eligible for Easy Rewards points redemption.
The deal applies a flat 15% discount across the listed gift cards, including brands like Ulta Beauty and Chipotle.
The eBay electronic gift cards reportedly use a 17-character alphanumeric code, which can make brute-force guessing harder than 13-digit numeric codes.
Swap cards let you select multiple brands and set specific balances per brand without redeeming the full $100 at once.
Swap cards can be converted into merchant-specific electronic gift cards that include a scannable barcode and cashier instructions for in-store use.
DoorDash gift cards reportedly showed as in stock but did not receive the advertised discount in the cart.
Chipotle gift cards reportedly showed out of stock, limiting availability for that brand.
