This UGREEN 5 port 2.5Gb Ethernet switch stands out as a low cost way to add multi gig networking without upgrading the whole network. It can let 2.5G devices talk to each other at full speed even if the router is still 1G, and setup has been described as seamless. The main tradeoffs are the plastic case and the lack of link speed indicators on the LEDs, with some preference for metal or managed, PoE powered alternatives. A solid budget pick for basic plug and play 2.5Gb expansion.

  • The switch can let 2.5Gb devices communicate at 2.5Gb even when the rest of the network stays at 1Gb.

  • The setup and day-to-day operation have reportedly been seamless after upgrading from a slower switch.

  • The plastic case design still reportedly works fine for basic 2.5Gb switching needs.

  • The deal price can feel compelling for 2.5Gb networking when compared to typical multi-gig costs.

  • The LED indicators reportedly do not show link speed, which can make it harder to verify 2.5Gb connections at a glance.

  • Heat may be a concern for plastic, passively cooled multi-gig switches under warmer room conditions.

  • The switch may be less suitable for managed or PoE-in setups compared with alternatives like the Ubiquiti 5 Flex Mini 2.5.

  • The value tradeoff can be less attractive when scaling to more ports, since 2.5Gb switch hardware costs rise quickly with additional links.

FYI, plastic case and reviews say LEDs don't tell you link speed. That said, it's cheap and reviewers also say it works fine.

Great to see multi-gig coming down in price. Still, I prefer metal casing when possible.

Keep in mind you don't have to upgrade your whole network to use this. If you connect some 2.5G devices to this switch, they will talk to each other at 2.5G, even if the rest of your network is only 1G.
My PCs and my NAS have 2.5G NICs, and talk to each other at that speed, while the rest of the network is only 1G. I'm still using my 6-year-old 1G router.

Good price from a reliable brand. Personally I've been switching to the Ubiquiti 5 Flex Mini 2.5 because form factor, PoE in, and it's managed.

I've been looking at the BrosTrend ones that seem to get good reviews on servethehome. I just installed the S1-V2 8port for the metal case, $66 (coupon price vs normal $78). So far so good.

Same, however for the plug and play crowd may be overkill. I am concerned that my main Flex mini flaked out a bit when my room temp inadvertently got to 80F. Point is heat could be an issue for any of these plastic passive cooled models.

This is pretty cheap for 2.5 gb. However, the Ubiquiti 2.5gb switch is $20 more and has the ability to be powered over poe. I would consider both.

I'm surprised switches still cost this much. I guess it's mostly the throughput?
