Why would I not just go to Walmart and spend $50 and buy a full tank?

If you're ok with using a 20 lb tank, then do that. This deal is for people that don't always need 20 lbs of propane and would rather carry a 5 lb tank weighing 15 lbs vs 39 lbs for a full 20 lb tank.

These are great for hike in camping and also for propane torch (for those that do weed/grass/field burns)

You do not own the tanks you get from Walmart tank refill machines (or any tank machine.)
not sure what you are referring to here..... if you buy a 20lb rhino or whatever tank at walmart/whereever, you definitely own the tank. great thing is, if it is too old you swap on old rusty one for a new one at walmart. a bit more expensive than a fill station but you get a new tank. you are talking about the 100lb tanks where you have a contract and they get refilled regularly.

Yes, swapping out an expired tank one valid reason to use a tank exchange. Otherwise you should go to a filling station and get your tank filled with more propane for less money.

Because this one is smaller. Depending on what you're using and where a smaller footprint/weight may be useful. I love this for camping and ice fishing, but of course for my home gas grill I use a 20 pounder.

when you exchange a cylinder it costs something like $20. when you do not have an exchange you pay about $60 to get a cylinder out of the rack. that $40 difference is you purchasing the cylinder, which you then own

seems to be this price everywhere. $50 at homedepot as well. It's odd to me that the 5lb and 20lb empty tanks retail for about the same cost.
