This 3 pack of 5 gallon Costco buckets stands out as a very cheap, sturdy utility set for yard work, car washing, gardening, and storage. The buckets are described as reinforced, with a rounded base and side handles that make them easier to carry and empty than typical Home Depot, Lowe's, or Harbor Freight buckets. The main drawback is that they do not include lids, and lid compatibility and food safety are debated. Pricing is repeatedly cited around $4.99, or about $1.67 each, making it a strong value if plain buckets are all you need.

Common Questions (5)

  • The in-store price is $4.99 for the 3-pack at many warehouses, which works out to about $1.67 per bucket. Some comments also note the price had been $8.99 before dropping to $4.99, and that pricing can vary by store clearance.

  • Yes, Harbor Freight lids have been reported to fit, and specific Home Depot and Lowe's lid options were also reported as compatible. A screw-top Gamma-style lid is another suggested upgrade if you want a tighter seal for storage.

  • They're commonly used for car washing, yard work, vegetable growing, tree watering, brewing grain storage, and general hauling or cleanup. The reinforced bottom and rounded base make them sturdier than basic big-box buckets, and the 3-pack is cheap enough for multi-bucket setups.

  • No, the buckets do not include lids, and Costco does not appear to sell them separately for this item. Compatible options mentioned include Harbor Freight, Lowe's, Home Depot, and GammaSeal-style lids, which can be bought separately if you need a cover.

  • Costco confirmed the item is NSF rated but not food-grade material. The buckets are marked NSF Standard #2, but that does not guarantee direct food storage, so they're better treated as food-equipment or general-purpose buckets unless you verify the exact use case.

Had no idea Costco had these. Are they sturdy as Home Depot, Lowes, etc. buckets?

I don't see what the market is here? No lids, most people will want lids. But more importantly, anything I need a bucket for I don't necessarily need a clean one and I have tons from various projects (drywall mud buckets, paint buckets etc). The only bucket I have that's clean and I keep it clean is the bucket I use for turkey brining (and that needs a lid)
I'm using them to water trees. Drill a hole in the bottom and you get a slow release of 5 gallons of water

These are definitely premium buckets. Reinforced and rounded base make these better than the Home Depot/Lowes/HF ones

These blue lids from Lowe's are reported to fit these Costco buckets. https://www.lowes.com/pd/United-S...1002473248

I don't see that anywhere... Food grade has specific symbols they put on the buckets typically and these don't seem to have that
TLDR it is not food-safe.
"certified to NSF ANSI standard #2" it says on the side, which, according to GenAI, means it is somewhat food-related, but more info is required.
It further states "DR761045", which matches an NSF product listing for a "5 Gallon Bucket" from Greenmade by U.S. Merchants, and that exact listing says: "Intended for Splash Zone use only." which in plain English means"acceptable to use around food-service mess and washdown conditions, but not certified as the place where the food itself goes."

Never saw these in the warehouse. What area of a warehouse would one commonly find these in?
Near the hoses and other garden/outdoor shit here in NC.

Is there a difference between a normal HDPE bucket and a food grade HDPE bucket?
