See photo of NSF Standard #2 (American National Standard For Food Handling Equipment) marking on the bucket.

Per NSF:

"NSF/ANSI 2-2025 covers the minimum food protection and sanitation requirements for the materials, design, fabrication, construction, and performance of food handling equipment. Such equipment includes bakery, cafeteria, kitchen, and pantry units and other handling and processing equipment like tables and components, counters, tableware, hoods, shelves, and sinks, among others.

Considerations in play here include the smoothness of angles and corners in a food zone, the usage of fasteners, latches, hinges, and the cleanability of various components for sanitation. These concerns, as well as many others, are outlined in the NSF/ANSI 2-2025 standard."

How are you seeing an in store price for Costco on the app?
Tap the "Warehouse" tab at the bottom, select a store, then search by either keyword or item number.

These blue lids from Lowe's are reported to fit these Costco buckets. https://www.lowes.com/pd/United-S...1002473248
Lid is more expensive than the bucket. Might check out dollar tree or Aldi.

TLDR it is not food-safe.
"certified to NSF ANSI standard #2" it says on the side, which, according to GenAI, means it is somewhat food-related, but more info is required.
It further states "DR761045", which matches an NSF product listing for a "5 Gallon Bucket" from Greenmade by U.S. Merchants, and that exact listing says: "Intended for Splash Zone use only." which in plain English means"acceptable to use around food-service mess and washdown conditions, but not certified as the place where the food itself goes."
Thanks Gemini. You smarter than alexa 4sho.

This is about the best price you'll find on these buckets. I've been doing research on these 5 gallon buckets, wanting them food grade for food storage. Home depot and Lowe's are about $6 for each bucket, for a basic, 70 mil thickness bucket. Many other makers make a 90 mil thickness, but can be considerably more expensive. The gamma lids, which screw on, claim to be air tight. So, if you're storing food, look for a gamma lid for a 5 gallon bucket. Even if you're not storing food, the screw on lid is easier to deal with. The lids are always more money than the buckets, FYI.
I bought food grade bucket & gamma screw on lid for my jasmin rice at homey depot. Best thing since white rice.

These are exceptional buckets:
1) they don't get stuck to each other when pulling them out
2) the bottom is reinforced so the bottom doesn't crack when loaded with rock/gravel/etc
3) the sides have handles that make emptying much more comfortable
That's what you don't get from H. Depot, Lowes, H.Freight bucket

agree. when i saw them at costco a while back i actually thought it was sold by the bucket not realizing it's a set of 3. after seeing the SD thread i picked up a set yesterday for washing car and yes these are very good buckets.
