This Falcon 5W diode laser looks like a solid starter engraver for wood, opaque plastics, painted metal, and other flat materials. The community notes it can remove paint from metal tags, mark stainless steel by discoloring or coating removal, and handle simple projects like labels and small signs. Setup often needs extras such as eye protection, ventilation, a honeycomb bed, and air assist, and LightBurn is repeatedly favored over the included software. The main limit is power, since 5W is too weak for true metal engraving or cutting and curved surfaces are harder. A practical pick if you want to learn laser engraving without jumping to a higher power machine.

  • The unit can remove paint or coating from painted metal tags for custom designs.

  • Lightburn is described as easier to use than the included software for designing engravings and cuts.

  • Coupon stacking can lower the effective price for certain configurations and versions.

  • The diode laser can produce strong results on 3D-printed material and thin cork or wood projects.

  • The diode laser wavelength is not suitable for engraving metals and it will only discolor metal surfaces.

  • Safety risks include blindness, lung damage from toxic fumes with some materials like PVC, and fire hazards.

  • Engraving curved polymer parts like a handguard can be difficult due to the surface curvature.

  • Some coupon combinations can cancel out when adding additional percentage-off codes, reducing expected savings.

I had some sort of $15 offer if I paid using the Shop app (don't know if it's targeted) and another $4.95 off using WELCOME5, so price was $79.05 after discounts. Thanks!

MSRP $299 must be a joke, I think this is a fair deal at best.

Admittedly I haven't used it up to it's full potential but this unit is solid.

Ugh, you and me both. I'm making an effort to get rid of more stuff than I bring into my house. Now I need to throw two things out!

It might be able to do aluminum but it will be limited to flat surfaces on polymer, the curve of a front handguard for a longer pewpew is going to be tough due to the curve of them. Polymer should be no problem as long as it is flat. I read that there is a learning curve to it and the software that comes with it is, a bit difficult to use, but Lightburn is a much easier to use program.
I was looking at this for aluminum and steel but from what I read you need a 20w laser engraver for most metals.

Is this strong enough to engrave plastic and metal name badges? If not, what should I be looking for?
