Standard salted butter is self stable on the counter for 2 weeks without issues (50+ years of experience). Obviously, it can melt during warm summer days. Airtight adds another week or two of life.

You definitely want to keep butter in something airtight if you're storing it in the refrigerator for any length of time, because butter is quite good at absorbing any odors that may be present there. It doesn't have to be a specialized dish like this, but it really should be isolated from the normal airflow in a fridge. This may be less of a concern with butter substitutes (I don't know), and what you use it for can matter, but real butter can soak up off flavors.
Real butter stays in the butter dish on the counter, no issues. When its hot, you may need to put it in the fridge.

Recently bought this or a similar model. That top cover cracked a couple weeks into using it, very fragile. Think I'll go back to a butter twister if I can locate one at a reasonable price.

Who keeps butter that long? Y'all gotta be using your butter faster.

I assume the air tightness is to try to prevent it from going rancid. However, butter will keep a long time on counter even without that, and refrigeration will slow things going rancid too.

If I was really concerned with this, I'd learn to use a "butter bell". I have my doubts that something made of plastic, repeatedly used, is really going to be airtight. And there are probably other ways to keep butter longer term without refrigeration too. I'd experiment - but by the time It would make a difference, We'd have already eaten this weeks butter.

But it is a good reason to study things going rancid (like brown rice ie) and ways to prevent it, slow it, or buy around it. And if you have a lot of butter, I understand you can freeze it too.

I can see some amount of isolation to keep it from drying out or taking on flavors, but I have had an OXO butter dish for over 10 years with just a clear lid that sits on top and I suspect the tiny amount of air that's able to creep between those gaps is nothing compared to the exposure every time you open it to use it. The latch might be nice so it doesn't fall out if dropped or something, but it seems like a small but unnecessary hassle to have a latch every time you want to open the dish.
