They are cleaned and pads replaced. Tbh, most of mine ordered could pass as new. I normally order through Ebay to get the 2 yr warranty included.

Yup I tried to warranty one before, and tried getting free replacement ear tips for another
Both times, sony support replied and said:
"After reviewing the serial number you provided, we found out your unit is flagged as recycled in our database. These units are usually sold by our warehouse to dealers as refurbished/reconditioned with no warranty coverage from the manufacturer. "

I have the XM3 earbuds and XM4 Overhead headphones and the XM3 sound way WAY better. the XM4 headphones are very boomy and extremely bass heavy, while not being clear like the XM3 buds are. I know the design of the buds improved in the models after the XM3s, but i'm wondering if the sound quality is even better than it was on the XM3s

Fair. For me, I find that all in-ear tips get pretty gross after a period of time. I like the way that foam tips can be squeezed, compressed, and then once in the ear, they expand and fill the space. I much prefer that on airplanes than using a massive over ear headphone thing.

That's true and I forgot about that. I originally bought these because I wanted to try some cheap tips and see if they worked well because I was going to return the buds. But these worked so well (and still do) that I decided to keep the buds and forgot about the screen issue. Still enjoying the buds and the tips. Is the screen to protect the inside of the beds from earwax?

Same, arrived today sound excellent. Only issue I had was to factory reset because the previous owner could track them so make sure you factory reset them. Was definitely a slickdeal.

Most buds have the built in mesh screen but Sony decided to complicate the issue.
