I bought this about a year ago & have used it as a closet clothes rack. So far so good with the tension as it has not moved or fallen of since I put it up.

I think it comes down to how wide you expand the rod. If you extend the peace with the spring, it is too weak. If you don't have to expand the part with the spring that it has enough tension.
