I went through 3 other thermometers in a year before getting this one (they all leaked and died or needed new batteries every two weeks). This is the one you want. Been in the pool for two years now without even needing to replace batteries or anything. It's been excellent

I've replaced the batteries once. I did find if you change under settings "long battery life mode" has improved the battery life. I compared to an instant read thermometer in addition to my bbq probes and it was pretty accurate.
I don't recall it ever ending up in the skimmer, the buoyancyupthrust shape/design seems to be doing its job, and the probe is long enough that it remains under the skimmer bottom. I rotate this between the spa and pool, its usually in the spa section of my pool so I know when its heated to my desire.
I am getting one for my pond, my goal is to do a smart action to turn on the pond pump to aerate when the pond gets a certain temp.
