Can rowing machines be modified to allow for other types of workouts?

everyone should avoid this taobao copy. you're better off buying a used concept2 than stuff like this. it makes such a huge difference in your rowing. i'd recommend a c2 over even the technogym rower which has a handle that's also way more thicker. and the sound really shouldn't be a deal breaker to anyone. you'll be rowing with earbuds anyway (does anyone actually row for 30 min in silence?). and the c2 isn't even that loud

I bought this October 29th last year at full price. I have no experience with any other rowing machine, but I have used it every single day since it arrived on November 2nd. I am pleased with it. It's not super fancy. The screen is very basic and distance is tracked in miles not kilometers. I wanted an inexpensive machine to get used to, so I could decide if I wanted something nicer in the future. It has different settings for tension(?). I am not sure of the correct terms, but I started on the highest setting and forced myself to adapt, so I don't know if the different settings actually work. The seat is hard plastic, so I ended up buying a cushion for it. I am down close to 30 lb. plus increased muscle. After breaking my foot and still needing surgery, I needed something that wouldn't cause additional damage while getting a decent workout and creating a positive habit. So far I haven't had any issues with it other than the strap getting off track a few times during one session. This was and wasn't the machines fault. I was having a very weak day and my form was off, causing it to wrap back into the machine incorrectly. I could see this being an issue in the future if I am not paying attention. It was fixed by just pulling the bar out as far as it would go, and letting it wrap correctly. I think it could have been a bigger issue though, if it got stuck wrong. I am also pretty tall, so I feel like my knees should be lower before I start to push/pull to avoid the bar hitting them, but with no other experience, I am not sure. At the end of the day, the machine works for me. Tempted to buy a second and send it to my mom out of state, so I don't break my streak when I visit.
What's your height and weight? Im trying to figure out if the resistance is highest enough for someone my size.

Why do they (Chinese imports) all have such bad photoshopping? Like it is a thing that must be done.
Don't get me started on English voice dubbing. Scene will be guy is running and the voice actor sounds like he just ate a cracker! 🤦 ♂️

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Rowing is not about resistance. Even at their highest settings, the most respected brand, Concept2 rowers offer relatively little resistance to motion. I'm sure this one is fine for 99% of all users.

Stationary rowing is about using your whole body's large muscle groups to slide your body weight back and forth. Repeatedly moving that mass builds to a workout rather quickly even on the lowest "resistance" settings. The resistance is mainly felt in the initial tug, and very little is necessary to get a good workout.

If you're new to rowing, by the time you "need" higher resistance, you'll either find this one sufficient, or probably will have already moved on to a Concept2 anyway.

Even using a Concept2, after thousands of miles rowed, I rarely go above half-way on the resistance. It's not necessary, and doesn't feel as much like being on a real rowing scull as the lower settings.

Yes, if you buy two, you can do bicep curls with them

I like the thought. Google tells me a refurb costs me $450. Does that sound right to you?
If so, there's a big difference in cost. As a new guy I'm not sold on that much equipment. Sounds like Concept2 needs a subscription too?
I've had my Concept 2 for 4 years and I didn't even know there was anything to subscribe to. You can use it completely offline. The screen (which is powered by your rowing itself! nice touch) tells you distance and pace.

The machine can also be flipped easily to an "upright" position for easy storage + to free up floor space when not in use.

Kind of hard to explain, but even though it's a big heavy gym-quality machine... flipping it to upright is effortless even if you're exhausted from a workout. They got the balance just right.

Only disclaimer is, I have not used other rowing machines, so I can't really compare it. But it is seriously one of the nicest things I have ever owned.

I have a cheap rower in the garage and I actually do enjoy using it. Mine is kinda loud, sounds like battery-powered leaf blower revving. I have to use earbuds to hear my music. I don't feel like it's built large muscles but it keeps my shoulders toned and is more of a cardio workout where you control the pace. Mine doesn't have adjustable resistance though, and I do wish I had bought one that's adjustable and is quieter like this one. I would go back and get this one instead if I could have, I think I paid around $100 for my very basic one.
It's funny. I never felt like the rowing machine was building upper body. I stopped rowing for a few years. Started softball in the meantime.

This year I started rowing again, and when softball season started, the ball was absolutely flying off of my bat. Seven games into the season I have the first 3 HR of my life.

Mine has adjustable resistance and I use it on the highest setting. So I feel like it's definitely adding strength on top of the cardio.

Received mine yesterday. It's very quiet. I don't have any prior experience with any rower, but I am happy with my purchase.

I've been on a Hydrow for over 4 years now. Kinda wish I had gone with a Concept 2 for the price as others suggest, but it is a hell of a machine. The handle recoil crapped the bed at right around 1,000,000 meters, but they sent me a brand new rower. Subscription is expensive and they just jacked up the price again but the on the water workouts are great. I'm not recommending the Hydrow as an alternative, as the price difference is about a $2,000 swing, just chiming in with another rowing experience.

I have a sunny meadow rower already and only row on the highest level. I would like to go with more resistance but dont have an option right now.
