The non-stick coating comes off fairly easily - I'm surprised they are including an abrasive sponge. These aren't bad for light use.

For camp cooking its kind of hard to justify the nonstick coating which is nice but needs careful cooking (no metal utensils ever, no overheating ever); I have bought a bunch of the regular anodized version of this kit and as long as youre doing basic stuff like making rice, eggs, soup, etc it will hold up fine and is still pretty easy to clean. For my kids i get them a very small tin of olive oil to cook with and they have made a lot of meals on their own with success.

Yes, using a Teflon (non-stick) pan over an open fire is a bad idea. Open flames easily exceed (500-600F), which is the threshold where non-stick coatings begin to break down, releasing toxic fumes, blistering, and flaking off.

This isn't for use over a fire. It's for use with a camping/ backpacking stove.

What's the best material for camping cookware? The coating will come off this one, stainless is sticky, cast iron can be quite non stick but super heavy...I guess my question is which is the least bad option, 😊

Mtn House meals and hot water. πŸ˜‰

Seriously though, I'd vote for stainless with some oil. Clean-up can be a bit of a pain, but with some remaining hot water and something abrasive, it's not that bad.

Cast iron is the best. You will ruin stainless steel over a fire
