For $8 just get it and if it doesn't work out for you return it.

The issue with a item like this is testing it can be difficult if its off by 30 degrees it may not be obvious etc.

The old chinese crap IR thermometer was reasonably accurate but the recent one I've bought is off by like 5 degrees and the readings were inconsistent. I ended up shopping for a real Fluke on the used market at around $30 and cleaning it up (the cheap ones are often dirty AF).

The first sanity test is to try boiling water (100 degC) and ice bath (0 deg C). If they are not spot on then forget it.

Not this specific brand but I think it's a clone of this one, it looks exactly the same. Mine has been AHOSOUTLEY wonderful with no issues, haven't even changed the batteries in 3 years cooking with it every other day don't forget to calibrate it

Not reliable at all.

Pointed it at the sun and it was reading 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Probably the same thing is priced at $8.69 on eBay, so a saving of $0.7 goes to frontpage...

Did you hold it for 20 minutes? It takes 10 minutes for light to travel to the sun. Another 10 minutes to bounce back. 😁
