Yes. You can rip your legally purchased ebooks and put them on kobos just fine. You can also "borrow" ebooks from zhe "library"

A good choice if you want a color reader for Koreader.

the color e readers are nice- but the refresh is laggy and can be hard to read. Kobo is good- but I still think it is proprietary tech with less than ideal software. ANYTHING is better than locked in kindle though- I opted for a cheap Bigme b6 color screen and it runs kindle app and other apps and I'm NOT locked into a proprietary os - Bigme has a full android on it and while limited allows me to do what I want on it- including loading whatever books, formats and apps I want. The color screen has a lot of ghosting - but it is color and I can live with it.

Kobo was my first alternative to crapazon but books can be expensive and their subscription did not have all the books I wanted. Kindle sucks- but they have the latest books so I still use them even though I HATE what they have done to digital rights. At least with open sourced books you have a real copy- not a subscription that has limited rights even if you think you own the book you do not.

Curios if anyone has own both a kindle and a kobo and which one did you find better in terms of book access, purchasing books, borrowing books, etc? Seems to me Amazon and Kindle almost have a monopoly in this area. As a Kindle owner wonder about Kobo and how it may either better or worse than what I have.
Depends on location, in the US the Libby integration to send to kindle is pretty good. I have an older kobo without Libby or overdrive, so I have to checkout a book, download epub and side load. Newer kobos have overdrive/libby so you can easily check out books on device from one library. There are ways to use overdrive to login to multiple libraries and you can receive your checked out books from multiple libraries, but it's not straight forward.

Buying books is probably very similar, both have their store fronts to buy from. Any place you can get an epub from you can buy books for the kobo and side load them at least. However, seems most stores are moving to proprietary formats. Kobos store still delivers their epub variant, though. Both you can use calibre to side load and convert, a reasonably similar process on both. Though I think newer kindles have some more quirks now. Using calibre to side load on kindle almost always requires removal of DRM, which may be a legal gray area. For books you bought and own, doubt you'd ever have any problems though. Sometimes stripping DRM isn't as smooth as it could be though.

For a typical user that just wants to read books in the US, the kindle is probably a better experience. However, you are locked in to Amazon. Kobo is more open, you can install things like koreader without having to jailbreak and you can source books from anywhere without conversion usually.

The other consideration will be kindle unlimited vs kobo plus, they are similar but different. You'd have to review them both to see if you'd use them and which you'd prefer. Amazon also locks authors into their ecosystem, for smaller/independent ones. So you may only be able to get the books from Amazon in that case.

I own a Kindle but I've started buying from Kobo recently. Kindle's ecosystem and DRM have just become far too locked down. Amazon has been cracking down on DRM removal, and has been eliminating means of getting Kindle books out of the walled garden. Even if you buy a DRM free book on Kindle, it's still effectively locked to that ecosystem unless you jump through a bunch of hoops. I use Calibre to manage my ebook library and Amazon has made it incredibly difficult to do that.
Kobo still lets you access your purchased ebooks without as many restrictions, and their DRM free books are actually completely DRM free epubs you can use anywhere, on anything.
Unfortunately, there are still a whole lot of things (mostly self-pub and indie publishers) that are Kindle exclusive due to Kindle Unlimited.

Buttons on this are awful - in my opinion worse than not having buttons (I returned it and stuck with my Kobo Clara Color).

Comparison to kindle:

Libby / OverDrive integration is better than the Kindle - you can browse and check out directly on the device itself. It's really good.

Both have integrated bookstores. On either store books are DRM locked and you can't easily use them on the other device. Yes, there are ways around that but it's not simple or very quick.

The Kindle IMO has better cloud functionality for books you get elsewhere. You get an email address, you send that a non-protected ebook, and it sends to your device AND is stored in a personal library. This is goated. Broadly speaking side-loading content onto Kobo is done by plugging it in and transferring files onto it like a removable drive. The newer devices have like Google Drive integration but in my experience it did not work well or in a way that was actually more convenient.

The devices are pretty comparable IMO. Similar quality eink, hardware quality, etc. The Kindle Oasis was great (fantastic page turn buttons) but that's discontinued and now they don't make a nice kindle anymore.

The Kobo is a bit more hackable if that's your jam. Of note is you can pair bluetooth controllers or keyboards to use as page turn buttons. You can install different UIs and various tools that let you do nerdy stuff.

Kaleidoscope 3 (color) e-ink looks terrible IMHO. I would rather go with a BW e-ink model or just a full on LCD/OLED tablet if you need color.

Audiobooks is where it's at, I switched a couple years ago, after reading paperbacks for 20 plus years. It's so amazing to be able to listen on the go, doing yard work, doing dishes, even on the job.

I wrote a detailed comment and lost it, so I'll make this one brief. I own most new gen Kindles since the Oasis because I love tinkering with devices. I also own the Kobo Clara Colour. The form factor of the Clara Colour is my favorite, and I love the size, and I suspect the one in this deal is nice because the Oasis buttons were so great. My Kobo does feel cheaper than the latest Kindles (there's a bezel on the screen much like the base Kindle line). There also isn't an easy way to transfer books outside of physically connecting and sideloading. Amazon lets you email books which is so great. If you have a digital collection of books, Calibre-Web has a "sync shelf" for Kobo feature which works similarly, but means I *have* to connect to my homelab (over Tailscale) to send a book. You can install Tailscale on the Kobo however, and also mod the Kobos in ways that Kindles don't allow. Think iOS for Kindle/Android for Kobo in terms of customization.

Is this faster than the Clara 2E. I don't mind it being black/white or small screen, just want something faster. My Clara crawls thru epubs.

Kobo is leaps and bounds better.
It is very easy to borrow books via Libby, but my friends and I share PDF version of books and we just email the book and I plug the Kobo over USB and download from the desktop.

Amazon has made some recent moves to close up their ebook ecosystem, so if I were looking for a reader now I wouldn't even consider a Kindle. Kobo is one of the best alternatives, although color e-ink hasn't really delivered yet.
