Still a good camera but if you can afford the a6700 I think it's worth the extra.

The sensor on this was already old when the a6400 came out; it's the same sensor as the prior generation (a6300 and a6500) and FSI (Front-Side Illuminated) because Sony refused to put a BSI (Back-Side Illuminated) sensor on APS-C until the a6700 and its variants. You get a noticeable boost to dynamic range and lowlight performance. The a6700 also uses the same battery as the full-frame cameras which lasts much longer than the older ones the a6400 uses.

Still, the a6400 is an excellent hobbyist/starter camera.

I have an A6700 which is a newer model but the A6400 is still a great camera. There are also loads of third-party lenses for the e-mount system, which these cameras are.

I have been debating Sony vs Nikon vs Cannon for my next camera. I really have no lenses or accessories that I need to worry about, so not locked into a platform. I had liked the coloring in my Nikon, but the camera is old and was an earlier digital camera. I would be making a significant technology jump with any of these newer cameras. I was looking to get a mirrorless camera and I was hoping for full frame. I may spend more money to make sure I can take good videos.

My film camera was Minolta, which Sony purchased. Served me well

I want this a6400 with the kit lense ($948 at the sites linked) but I found this and am trying to understand why it is $140 cheaper?

On another note, is it better to just get the body and separately by a Sigma lense? Cost? Which one is recommended for lightweight but versatile (like the kit lense)?

Potentially adding to the slickness is the (targetted) Amex offer of 50 off at Sony and moreso this rebate offer of 50 off at any authorized retailer, both combined just about match the used price of this cam

Based on what I can see, it seems like the Body + kit lens is cheaper? I don't get it either. I bought a A6400 Body from Amazon few months back and have purchased Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lenses separately. I don't think the kit lens is good enough but this is an entry level camera so maybe just get it, use the lens and then buy some prime or better zoom lens later?

I have this camera and have purchased couple of Sigma lenses. I'm a beginner so this was good enough for me. Yes I could have spent more and bought a A6700 but it seemed a bit expensive considering I'm a beginner and would have to buy some lenses as well.
People recommending to pay a bit more and buy A6700 but they don't mention it costs almost double at $1500 for the body. Plus if you buy a lens, you're looking at around $2000 for a camera for an entry level camera (if you're a beginner like me).
I'll probably upgrade later once I get better but spending $2K on a camera and lens when I don't know how to fully use the camera seemed a bit high
