This 14 inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro is being framed as a solid outgoing-model machine for demanding work, with strong performance and the usual MacBook Pro fan cooling. The 24GB memory and 512GB SSD are the main sticking points, especially for heavier workloads and anyone who wants more storage headroom. Several comparisons point to better past pricing on older M3 Pro and higher-storage configurations, while the M5 Pro is seen as the more future-proof step. A capable laptop, but the storage and price make it feel less roomy than the spec sheet suggests.

  • MacBook Pro buyers upgrading from an older 8GB, 128GB laptop, because this machine feels like a major speed and storage upgrade for multitasking.

    ss115891

  • Professionals needing consistent fan cooling, because this model is the one to choose when sustained thermal performance matters.

    BoyangS

  • Power users running heavy virtual machines or LLM workloads, because 32GB to 64GB RAM is described as the better range for those tasks.

    FAL

  • Video editors and file hoarders who need lots of local storage, because 512GB feels too small and 1TB is the minimum for them.

    kenstogiePapi-ChinoPapi-Chino

  • Shoppers comparing against last year's lower-priced Pro deals, because this pricing is viewed as worse than prior M3 Pro offers.

    AmusedWing8606slimdunkin117WiseClover328

  • Work users who keep many apps and browser tabs open, because 24GB RAM can still swap and feel insufficient for daily multitasking.

Not bad, but we've seen better for the previous gen. From Dec 24 to Jan 25, the base M3 pro was $1,250-$1,000 in store at Costco, since the M4 pro was already out at the time. Some lucky people were able to price match with Best Buy.

It doesn't look like that's happening this year since Costco doesn't even sell the base M4 Pro in store AFAIK.

My usage doesn't justify spending this much on a laptop. Currently have an M1 Air with 8GB of RAM. Definitely want 16GB at least but man, these prices are high for me haha. I've been hunting for a used base M1 Pro but those are going for $650+ and it's a 5 year old machine.

Maybe I just need to accept it and pay to play..

If your current Air is doing fine, why upgrade to a M1 Pro?

Mainly just want 16GB of RAM. In starting to feel only having 8Gb during multitasking.

For $650, you probably could get a M3 with 16GB of RAM. Probably no reason to spend that much on an M1 Pro when you can get a processor that is 2 generations newer.

Ok, glad to hear I'm not out of touch when I think M1 Pros listed for $650+ is a bit wild. I'm really in no rush to buy since this M1 Air is good enough for now.

i would think for this kind of coin you'd get more than 512gb ...unless maybe apple is trying to sell some cloud subscription thing. which is just another monkey on your back.

I think this is a decent price for an outgoing model. December of last year I got the 16 & 20 core with 1 tb ssd for $2100 from costco. Machine has been fantastic. It was a big upgrade (long overdue) for me from macbook pro that I bought in 2013. It had 8 gb ram & 128 gb had, it still runs but multi tasking on it was getting very slow and space was finally running out. Very happy with the newer machine.

Just curious, what makes you say that that deal may not be back anytime soon? I'm definitely kicking myself right now for not buying one then...
