For exclusively gaming, more or less although the 9850x3d is a direct upgrade.
But if you want a single machine to do both gaming and more heavily threaded productivity workloads, this is a good value purchase.

For certain productivity tasks (that can use all 16 cores, like rendering), these are excellent. Then again, you can supercharge your rendering output with a cheap Intel GPU, or a soon-to-be-released M5 Mac Mini.

For gaming, just get a 9800X3D, which uses a lot less watts for the same performance, and can still provide similar productivity performance in apps not optimized for >8 cores. Was able to snag a used one for under $300 locally.

That's 9950X3D2. But it's the boss that steals an extra $350 from you for the same performance.

why would I buy this obsolete pos? the 9950X3D2 is out.
It's a lot cheaper and the 9950X3D2 is only 10-20% faster in a limited number of workstation programs that can actually take advantage of the v-cache. The 9950X3D will be just as fast in gaming and most workstation programs because most of them don't use the v-cache.
