Key Concerns and Facts:
Controversy: There is conflicting evidence regarding its safety. Studies suggest it can cause inflammation and digestive issues, though some argue food-grade carrageenan is safe.
Potential Dangers: It is associated with intestinal inflammation, IBD, and potential cancer risks.
Alternatives: Many pet owners choose to avoid it, opting for brands that use alternatives like agar-agar, guar gum, or xanthan gum.
Presence: It is almost exclusively found in wet, canned food as a stabilizer and binder.
What to Look For:
To avoid it, check the ingredient list on canned food for "carrageenan". As suggested by some, opting for brands that specifically list themselves as "carrageenan-free" can provide peace of mind.
