Would have been better if they shared a single consciousness. The older one didn't get any of the benefits, just the repercussions

You're getting downvotes but you're completely right. The "performance" at the end not only ruins the entire movie but it drags on so long it's boring.

The ending was a big swing, and I don't think they totally landed it. But if you pay attention, the whole movie is surreal and impossible from the beginning. None of the hallways or doors make sense, or the view she has from her apartment. Her bathroom chamber doesn't make sense. Even that coffee shop she goes to doesn't make sense... why is it there? And where are all the friends or family in this woman's life?

The movie has a dreamlike quality and descends into a fever-like state by the end. I think it's just hard to notice because we're focused on the horrific things happening to a woman's body the whole movie.

My two cents. Doesn't mean you have to like the ending necessarily.

The Substance is a disturbing, body horror thriller with a striking premise and memorable visuals. The surreal setup and creepy, gross imagery keep it compelling, and the film stays intense enough to hold attention even when it gets very graphic. The main drawback is the ending, which is repeatedly described as dragging on, becoming ridiculous, and undoing the payoff for some. It is an unsettling watch that leaves a strong impression.

  • Viewers who want a disturbing body-horror movie, because it is creepy, gross, and memorable.

  • Fans of surreal, dreamlike horror, because the film builds impossible visuals and a fever-like atmosphere from the start.

  • Moviegoers who like bold endings that fit an extreme setup, because the finale matches the film's play-like visuals and prior escalation.

  • Viewers who want a satisfying ending, because the finale is described as ridiculous, boring, and ruining the movie.

  • People who prefer lighter, less graphic horror, because the film gets very graphic and gross.

  • Families watching in shared spaces, because the movie has heavy nudity and is not suitable with kids around.

Towards the end, this was a "what the hell am I even watching" movie that was just completely ridiculous. 😅

I would have turned this off when it started getting way too graphic with the nasty parts, but by then I felt invested in seeing how it ended. Then they whiffed on the ending.

All participants at the met gala this year should have been required to see the film after their strut. Enjoy

Very well stated and my thoughts exactly. I enjoyed the ending and based on everything that came before it, mostly just the play-like props and visuals, I didn't think that the ending was a stretch at all. The extremity of it was appropriate and not out of place in my opinion.

Like someone said earlier if she could turn younger in the same body for sometime limit before getting old again, the movie would have been a lot better.

One of those "interesting" movies that aren't fun to watch, and that you never want to see again.

Lol definitely not for watching on the plane with kids around. I'm surprised they have this movie as a option in the seatback entertainment system or did you a watch it on your own device?

Watched this one already. Quite creepy and gross. But it's a memorable movie, for sure 😅
