The movie has a dreamlike quality and descends into a fever-like state by the end. I think it's just hard to notice because we're focused on the horrific things happening to a woman's body the whole movie.
My two cents. Doesn't mean you have to like the ending necessarily.
Community Reviews
The Substance is a disturbing, body horror thriller with a striking premise and memorable visuals. The surreal setup and creepy, gross imagery keep it compelling, and the film stays intense enough to hold attention even when it gets very graphic. The main drawback is the ending, which is repeatedly described as dragging on, becoming ridiculous, and undoing the payoff for some. It is an unsettling watch that leaves a strong impression.
Common Questions (4)
The ending is a major swing and many found it ridiculous, boring, or disastrous after an otherwise strong setup. A smaller group felt it fit the film's surreal, play-like visuals and dreamlike logic.
It is a creepy, gross, and memorable film that many found disturbing but compelling enough to finish. It is not a light watch, and the graphic material can be intense, especially late in the runtime.
No, it is heavy on nudity and graphic body-horror, making it a poor choice for watching on a plane with kids nearby. The content can feel uncomfortable in public settings.
It is not MA-compatible, so a Vudu purchase does not necessarily carry over through Movies Anywhere. That matters if you want the title to sync across connected digital libraries.

I watched it on the plane. i felt like a creep because so much naked. but i was invested regardless of how gross it was at times lol. Still, overall i didnt care for the ending at all. completely ruined it.
