Apple refurbished M4 Air is being framed as effectively new, with the same warranty and a price that lands near typical sale levels for this model. The 16GB and 256GB base configuration is praised as a strong value for everyday use, school, and lighter performance needs, especially versus paying more for an M5 Air or a Pro. The main tradeoff is storage, since 256GB can feel tight for college, STEM work, or local files, and some comparisons point to cheaper 512GB alternatives. It is a solid middle ground if you want Air performance without stepping up to the pricier storage tiers.

  • College STEM students running VMs and large apps, because the 256GB drive can force external storage and erase the price advantage.

  • Families buying a laptop for a high school student, because the Air is described as excellent for that workload.

  • Shoppers who want more memory and CPU headroom than a lower-tier laptop, because this model is seen as a solid step up without moving to a Pro.

  • Buyers who need the strongest warranty protections, because paying with someone else's card can reduce purchase protections and extended coverage.

  • College STEM students who need local storage for VMs and apps, because 256GB can force an external SSD and wipe out the savings.

  • Power users who keep lots of files locally, because 256GB fills quickly and can make routine updates painful.

  • Shoppers who want the cheapest 512GB option, because a 512GB Neo can cost less than moving up to this refurbished Air.

I can certainly understand why you might feel a bit uncomfortable asking someone, especially if you're not very close to them.
Also, if someone with access buys it for you, can you use your own credit card or does it have to be the AAFES member?

$750 was the new price on this model around Black Friday and into the new year. I'd still consider this a very good price. As was already said, Apple Refurb should be considered new. Good deal.
yep was $749 at both costco and best buy numerous times last year
and $699 from The Exchange

then the Neo came out and it create a higher priced floor, pushing the MBA higher. funny how that works

I always use my card when ordering for others and request that they transfer the money to me.

And that's another problem. If the end user cannot pay with their own card, they lose out on potential purchase protections/extended warranty coverage.

why not just use a micro usb-c drive for extra storage for 1/10th the price?
For high school these are excellent laptops. But but... the Neo is also excellent and cheaper. For college - if you are into STEM major, you need at least the 512GB drive, I would buy the 16/512 M5 on sale now for $950. Otherwise, VMs and apps will force you to use external SSD, which will negate the difference in price. But then an external SSD might be 1/2 TB size...In essence, the 256 MBAir is an obsolesce now. Normal/home users can use the Neo, especially the 512GB variant, which is cheaper than this deal. All slightly more demanding users should use the 16/512GB MBAir unless your employer provides you a laptop anyway.

Not necessarily true. Apple products don't require a receipt for Apple Care. The warranty period begins only after the product is set up by the owner. The owner can set up their Apple Care account under their name.

Edit: Oh, I understand what you mean by added protection through their card. Yes, that might be an issue if that's important to you. You can also purchase additional coverage at the time of checkout, which could still be cheaper depending on the coverage since you're already saving money on the purchase price and taxes.

I wasn't talking about Apple Care. Personally, I've never paid for it and I don't intend to, because my credit cards have extended warranty protection that gets me a year or two extra, and after that I usually upgrade.

If I'm purchasing extended protection, either via Apple Care or otherwise, it more or less negates the savings achieved through having someone buy it with their AAFES account.

Example: The M5 MBA is $949 right now on Amazon; after tax it's roughly $1040. On AAFES it's $899, no tax. Apple Care is $70/year. If I have a credit card that extends the warranty for two years or more (e.g., Citi Strata, certain Amex and Cap1 cards), I break even, control the purchasing process and do not have to ask for an awkward favor, plus earn points/miles on the purchase (a reasonable 2% return nets me another $20, plus whatever CB site I can purchase through can also get me a few more bucks/points back; or if I use a Prime card on Amazon, I get back almost $50). Otherwise, it's a question of whether or not $70 is a large enough difference to go through the hurdles.

Kind of shocked to see the hate. I'm on an M4, paid more and have zero regrets (except I pretty much never pick up a tablet anymore). And these will last longer than the Neos.

You're right, but I think most people don't really track which credit card currently has the best sign-up bonus, what the approval requirements are, or how to maximize returns by using the right card through the right shopping portal. Similarly, very few people are familiar with extended warranty benefits offered by credit cards, let alone have experience filing a claim.
Because of that, the tax-free benefit from AAFES tends to feel like a simpler and more immediate discount, which is why most people prefer it.

16/256. This is about what we've come to expect as a "typical sale" price. Don't let the refurb tag fool you into thinking it's less. Apple refurbs should be considered "new." On the flip side, Apple refurbs often just pull the price down to everyone else's sale prices on new models. TL;DR: not slick, but a fair price for what you're getting
A refurb of any type is not new. It's that simple. These were selling me for $799 last year.

Yeah, it's a tough call. $759 for this or a new M5 for $950. The M5 has 512GB (vs 256GB) + wifi 7 + 10 core GPU (vs 8 here). Are those points worth $190 more? Personal choice. But if someone were trying to decide between the 512GB Neo at $699 vs this, you take the M4 Air all day long.
The upgrade from 256 to 512 was a $200 upgrade on the m4, so yes, the m5 with 512 for less than $200 more is a good price and a better deal.

The speed of the soc ssd is blazing fast. A usb-c flash drive is going to top out around 400mb/s and that isn't a sustained rate - that's a marketing number. You also then lose a usb-c port and run the risk of damaging the port if you don't remove the drive before transporting it. Sandisk 256gb is $63 on Amazon. So, you have to factor in that cost too.

You're probably better off spending the $200 on ai api access than the m5.

This is Slickdeals last I checked, yeah? I think you'll find that people here are a lot more attuned to things like credit card purchase coverage (I said nothing about sign-up bonuses, but that's also a potentially valid point) and shopping portal maximization. And I would pose to you that there are more such people here than those who can easily take advantage of AAFES.

I split the difference and got a refurbished M4 with 10/10/512GB for $849. Only an extra $90 for a little more graphics juice and double the storage. Paid $8 for next-day delivery, so should have it tomorrow.
