The Joe Jr is a compact ceramic kamado that shines at high heat, steady temperature control, and everyday charcoal cooking. It handles steaks especially well, and it can also do brisket flats, smoked chicken, burgers, and small meals for two to four. The solid build and heat retention stand out, though the 77 pound weight makes it hard to move and not truly portable. Heat up can take time, and the small cooking area limits indirect or low and slow cooks, making it a strong fit for backyard use rather than carry along trips.

  • The grill can reach screaming hot temperatures quickly after opening the vents, enabling fast steak cooking.

  • The ceramic design can provide good heat retention for everyday cooking like brisket flats, smoked chicken, and burgers.

  • The cooking workflow can avoid heating the entire grill by using a dutch oven first, then finishing with high-heat grilling.

  • The 13-inch cooking space can support meals for about two to four people.

  • The grill is not truly portable because it weighs about 77 pounds and can be impractical for picnics.

  • The grill can take a long time to heat up, which may reduce convenience versus quick-start cooking.

  • The grill can be too small for indirect heat or low-temperature cooking, limiting versatility for certain styles.

  • Cast iron grates can require frequent re-seasoning for high-heat use, and rust may trap grill-brush strands that could end up in food.

Yes, and gas prices show be like 3 years ago. I paid my Jr $200 4 years ago....Keep dreaming but if you get it at $200 now it would be great. In the meantime let's be honest, for $50 you will wait wait wait wait and miss the fun. In 2026 how much do you pay lets say for a regular nice Weber gas grill???? $250 for a Joe Jr it is too much..... ๐Ÿ˜ข
I now realize you are a "premier player"..... ๐Ÿ˜‚ I guess in the chepo league

The guys who say that kamado jr uses a lot of charcoal must be doing something wrong. I bought it about 2 years ago for the same price. Did many brisket flats and smoked chicken, steaks, burgers etc. it is a very versatile grill with great heat retention though it does not do any of these things perfectly if that's what you are after. I mean it can't compete with an offset smoker. For daily cooking it is great. I like that it is ceramic. For the price any gas grill you will buy will be rusted in a few years if you don't maintain it.

If you want quality material, good isolation and not temperature fluctuation you have to wait to heat up, it is the trade and it is worth it. If all you want is to be ready in 5 minutes buy a gas grill or a cheap kamado and then you will complain about temp not been steady. I own the Jr and a $5k Kamado Komodo 23" with all the premium accessories. My Jr is used more, heats up faster and it is a perfect size for our needs. The Komodo is used for bigger things or gatherings and it is perfect
So you've used the Acorn Jr then? Tell us about it....

The Joe feels way more solid than the Acorn. But the Acorn isn't anywhere as flimsy as a weber kettle (which I also love). But that's the problem, this isn't portable, its seriously a back breaker for most people, you will want two people to lift it unless you regularly do heavy work/strength training. The other issue is it takes 2x as long, and 2x the fuel as the Acorn Jr. And the Acorn JR is significantly bigger. The Joe will probably be around for your children's children. The Acorn, maybe last 10 years if stored out of the weather.
It's not easy to move it around and I finally bought a 3rd party cart so it can be easier to move in the backyard. I paid $194 so it's hard to spend over $200 for a KJ Jr. cart.

I had the Acorn for almost 9 years before throwing it out. I start noticing rust about 5 years in. It served me well during that time before getting the BJ, Joe Kettle and a Weber pellet grill.

Regular price $640?? Paid less than that for my full-sized KJ 4 years ago (love it BTW).
