Rachio 3 is a smart sprinkler controller that stands out for easy app based scheduling, weather aware watering, and remote zone control. It can cut water use, pair with rain sensors, and even monitor valve resistance with the paid add on. Long term reliability looks strong, with multiple units still running well after years. The main drawback is that it lacks a screen and physical manual controls, and the extra valve monitoring feature is worth waiting for when discounted. Rebates can also make the price much lower.

  • Long-term sprinkler owners who want a reliable controller, because multiple units have run for years with no issues and the system can pay for itself through water savings.

  • Homeowners with rebate eligibility, because utility rebates can cut the cost dramatically and sometimes make the controller nearly free.

  • Homeowners who want weather-based irrigation scheduling, because it skips watering when rain or wind is forecast and adjusts watering by season.

  • People managing zones from their phone, because it lets them change schedules and toggle individual zones without walking back to the controller.

  • Irrigation tinkerers who want valve-health alerts, because the optional add-on monitors sprinkler valve resistance and warns when a valve is going out.

  • People who need dependable scheduled watering, because the controller can lose connection, ignore inputs, and stop mid-cycle until a hard reset.

  • Households that need manual operation at the controller, because it has no screen or physical buttons for running zones without the app.

I've had my Gen2 for about 8 years now ($50 deal at Home Depot) and it's still running awesome. I'd highly recommend getting a Rachio.

I recently installed this a few months ago and it really is a smart sprinkler controller. This factors in weather data reports, type of grass, and if you test the type of soil you have and determines to most effective way to water your grass. It is worth it 100%.

Had this unit for two years now and I agree it's a great purchase. I actually got it from Costco Jan. 20th, 2024 for $99.

We've had a Rachio 2 for about a decade now, and honestly it's so easy to use there's no real reason to upgrade. They've slowly added minor quality of life improvements to the free app so I can't really complain (I know right, actually getting better over time instead of the usual enshittification).
I have a Gen 1 8-zone for 9 years and it's solid.

Check out https://rachio.com/rebates. My water agency provides a rebate and my first Rachio (Gen 2 - 8 zone) cost me $25+tax after the rebate. Rachio has its quirks (can't add a scheduled run, can't re-schedule a scheduled run), but it's pretty reliable.
Yup - I came to remind everyone of the rebates. I basically got my Rachio for almost free with the rebate from my water provider.

Rachio has been my fav sprinkler controller for years. Great options and if you pay the extra $25 option then it will monitor your sprinkler valve resistances and tell you when one is going out.

I just paid $200 for an 8 zone at HD last month. Good system for the price range. If you live in the Western US, look for rebates.

They often have $10 off deals on the valve monitoring software feature addon. I would wait for those. Just FYI.

I see the appeal of a smart/connected controller, but at this price point to also not include a screen and physical buttons for manual control is a deal-breaker for me. Someone that has the app on their phone can run the system, but if they're not around and someone else wants to run it manually then what?

Can this be installed by the average person? Is it simply an unplug wires from previous controller and insert to this one?

Yes, just make sure you label all of the old wires and their connections before you remove them from the Hunter.
