I would avoid orbit. I have two smart controllers and 8 of the smart hose timers. Initially they were great 6-7 years ago, no bugs, always worked. Now they are the most buggy pos that I'm probably going to replace them with this deal.
All of them get random rain delays even though I've disabled smart watering on all them. The rain delays are some times set to years. I've seen 2, 7, and 19 years get set. Just this year they all started randomly turning off in the middle of a cycle. They'll start and then run anywhere from 10 seconds to a couple min and just turn off before finishing a cycle. They never did that before. Every year it's a new problem added to existing old problems. They are not trust worthy.
It's not just one device it's all 10 of them. They are at two different houses so it's not even the same Internet or Wi-Fi that could be the cause. The common thing among them all is the bhyve software.
Rachio 3 is a smart sprinkler controller that stands out for easy app based scheduling, weather aware watering, and remote zone control. It can cut water use, pair with rain sensors, and even monitor valve resistance with the paid add on. Long term reliability looks strong, with multiple units still running well after years. The main drawback is that it lacks a screen and physical manual controls, and the extra valve monitoring feature is worth waiting for when discounted. Rebates can also make the price much lower.
Long-term sprinkler owners who want a reliable controller, because multiple units have run for years with no issues and the system can pay for itself through water savings.
Irrigation tinkerers who want valve-health alerts, because the optional add-on monitors sprinkler valve resistance and warns when a valve is going out.
It has a strong long-term track record in these comments, with multiple units still working well after 8 to 9 years and one Gen 1 still running flawlessly. A few users also report quirks or app limitations, but the controller itself is described as solid and reliable.
Yes, rebates can make the controller much cheaper, sometimes nearly free depending on your water provider or local agency. Several comments point to checking Rachio's rebate page and local water-company rebates, especially in Western US areas.
Yes. You can turn individual zones on and off from the app, which is handy for testing sprinkler heads or making quick changes without walking back to the garage controller. It also makes scheduling and remote adjustments much easier.
Yes. It uses weather forecast data to skip watering when it rains or is windy, and it can also factor in grass type and soil testing to choose watering more effectively. That makes it useful for reducing overwatering in winter and increasing watering in hotter months.
Whats the advantage of this over something like Zooz zwave relay (which I can connect to home assistant and is cheaper). Im wondering whether to pay more and go for this or just buy a zooz zwave relay for about $60 and connect to my home assistant and I can setup automation to run the sprinklers only based on weather.
Also, how does this know whether it has rained? In south florida, even if the weather app says its raining, sometimes there is no rain.
got the 3, 8 port second hand it's so robust. Ill probably never upgrade lol highly recommend regardless of the price point. These things do exactly what they're made for and hardly ever break
Agree, my bhyve sucks. I thought it was a deal at $40 but nooope. Sometimes it just randomly doesn't connect so my inputs or watering schedules don't run. Only way to get it working again is a hard reset. I could get a smart plug to remotely do it if I'm not home but it has one job. Open the valves when programmed and it can't do that reliably.
10000% steer far away from Bhyve, I confirmed their Android App doesn't sync correctly with data provided in their web portal. Smart watering is a buggy mess even with advanced fields input correctly. Look for a rebate / sale on Ranchio at all costs.
