Barilla ProteinPLUS multigrain penne comes across as a close stand in for regular pasta, with a familiar taste and texture that works well for kids and for boosting protein and fiber. The price looks attractive against recent regular Barilla increases and higher local or club prices, so the deal feels better than the small per ounce savings suggest. The main caveat is that the first ingredients are wheat, so it is not a dramatic departure from standard pasta. A solid pantry staple if you want a more nutritious everyday pasta.
Common Questions (4)
It is considered a solid price, especially since regular Barilla prices have risen and local prices were mentioned around $2.99 per box or about $2.12 at Sam's Club. The savings are small versus standard pasta, but the deal is still attractive for this protein pasta.
Yes. It closely resembles the taste and texture of regular pasta, and it is described as tasting like pasta rather than beans. That makes it an easy swap for shoppers who want a protein pasta without a strong bean-like flavor.
It is described as a healthier choice than regular pasta, and it is noted as being very high in fiber with 18% of the daily fiber value per serving. The first ingredients are wheat, so it is still a wheat-based pasta rather than a bean-based one.
Yes. It is described as close enough to regular pasta that kids do not need it mixed 50/50 with regular pasta, and it is also reported to be a hit with kids who like the taste. That makes it useful for adding a bit more protein and fiber to family meals.
