I suggest getting the machine and grinder separately, gives you far more range and if one breaks you can keep using the other
One of those plus an Encore ESP is cheaper overall and you can use the extra to buy a tamping station and better tamp
All their machines are set to 93* C, which is a good mid point for dark and medium roast but if you are going to do light or light-med roasts you might want to play with that setting
Community Reviews
The Barista Express is a long-running entry-level espresso machine that makes café-style drinks at home and has a strong reputation for durability. The built-in grinder, front pressure gauge, and polished design are major draws, and the machine is praised for saving a lot versus coffee shop drinks. The older thermocoil heating system is slower than newer Breville models, and steaming milk can feel sluggish. It also takes some dialing in and maintenance, so it suits buyers who want an all-in-one starter machine and do not mind a learning curve.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. It is widely used as an entry-level machine and is often described as a strong first espresso setup, especially if you want an all-in-one unit with a built-in grinder. It can make coffee-shop-style drinks, but dialing it in takes practice and maintenance.
It can make very good coffee, but the built-in grinder is a common limitation and may make dialing in harder than using a separate grinder. Several comments recommend pairing a machine like this with a separate grinder for better control and consistency.
It has a strong track record for long-term use, with multiple reports of 8 to 10+ years of daily operation and no issues. One long-term owner said it made 2 to 4 drinks per day for 8 years before failing, while others called it a tank.
Yes. Comments point to used units under $300 on Facebook Marketplace, refurbished Breville options, and retail sightings around $499 at Marshalls/HomeGoods. One comment also notes the Barista Pro may be a better buy at this price or less.
The Barista Express uses an older thermocoil heating system that takes about 30 to 40 seconds to heat up, and a similar amount of time to switch between brewing and steaming. That is slower than newer ThermoJet machines, but it is usually not a dealbreaker because you can grind, level, and tamp while it warms.

I've gone really deep down the coffee rabbit hole since buying my espresso machine. If you want some REALLY good beans, look up Onyx coffee roasters. They are constantly rated amongst the best coffee roasters in the world. My favorite of their beans is their "tropical weather." It is pricey, but I finally understood specialty coffee after trying their coffee beans. It is really unique experience drinking a coffee with an almost tea/floral taste. If you want to go down the rabbit hole yourself, I'd suggest googling "reddit best coffee beans" and reading through some threads.
