I suggest getting the machine and grinder separately, gives you far more range and if one breaks you can keep using the other
One of those plus an Encore ESP is cheaper overall and you can use the extra to buy a tamping station and better tamp
All their machines are set to 93* C, which is a good mid point for dark and medium roast but if you are going to do light or light-med roasts you might want to play with that setting
Community Reviews
The Barista Express is a long-running entry-level espresso machine that makes café-style drinks at home and has a strong reputation for durability. The built-in grinder, front pressure gauge, and polished design are major draws, and the machine is praised for saving a lot versus coffee shop drinks. The older thermocoil heating system is slower than newer Breville models, and steaming milk can feel sluggish. It also takes some dialing in and maintenance, so it suits buyers who want an all-in-one starter machine and do not mind a learning curve.
The Barista Express can deliver coffee-shop style results with heavy daily use over years.
The machine can heat using a thermocoil system while you grind and prep, reducing perceived downtime.
Long-term ownership experiences report no issues for a decade of daily use.
Refurbished Breville options can provide a lower-cost path if you are comfortable buying remanufactured units.
The built-in grinder setup can make dialing in difficult and may require lots of maintenance.
The thermocoil heating system can take 30 to 40 seconds to heat and similar time to switch modes.
Steaming milk can be slow, with some owners reporting 45 seconds to 1 minute.
The Barista Express may not be the best value at this price point compared with alternatives like the Barista Pro.

Yes it's a Chinese brand with a some AstroTurf but for $160 bucks the machine works for me
My FIL had the Express and it makes good coffee but is not easy to dial in and requires a lot of maintenance
I found the Ultra a good starting point and if you like it and want to up your game you can go buy a more expensive machine
But with any manual machine it will come down to technique and how much you are willing to invest in learning
And FWIW, I was in the OG group of roasting beans in a popcorn machine near 20 years ago, and this machine might as well be in a coffee shop--that's how much use it gets.
So yes, absolutely buy one.
