About this eBook:
  • A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).

A Confederacy of Dunces is a classic comic novel that lands as a genuinely funny, often masterpiece level read. The story builds thread after thread until everything comes together, and Toole's New Orleans descriptions are vivid enough to make the city feel immediate even when place names have changed. It also carries a notable posthumous publication story behind it. The main caveat is that the humor may read as funny rather than outright hilarious for some readers, but it remains a memorable, re readable classic.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. It's described as a classic, really funny comedy and even a masterpiece, with several readers saying it's worth reading and easy to recommend. One comment also notes it's been on a wishlist for years waiting for a price drop, making the Kindle deal especially appealing.

  • It's repeatedly described as very funny, with some calling it hilarious and others saying it made them laugh many times. One reader felt it was funny but not hilarious, so the humor lands strongly for many but not everyone at the same intensity.

  • Yes. The book was published posthumously after Toole died before publication, and his mother reportedly shopped it to dozens of publishers for years before it became a classic.

  • Yes. The novel's New Orleans setting is vivid enough that it can still help you recognize the city even though some place names have changed, and one commenter called it required reading for people from New Orleans.

  • Yes. The story is described as building thread after thread until everything suddenly comes together, which is part of why it's called a masterpiece.

Great book. Guy died before it was published and his mom shopped it around dozens of publishers for years before it was published and became a classic. Really, really funny book.

It's incredible: This novel builds thread, after thread, after thread. You think they can't be going anywhere, and suddenly they all come together. What a masterpiece.

After reading this book take a trip to New Orleans. You'll be shocked at how well Toole described the city. While the names of places have changed you'll still feel like you know where you are. Have a Lucky Dog along the way.

Is this the thing with the pyloric valve, and maybe hotdogs? I read a lot in college, it's ringing a bell. The dude is gross right?
