The Roomba j7 plus is a camera based self emptying robot vacuum that does well on hard floors and can avoid obstacles, including pet messes, while the self emptying bin and replacement parts help keep ownership costs down. Several long term reports say it still works great after years, with decent battery life and solid pickup for dust and dog hair. The main drawbacks are slower cleaning than lidar models, weaker coverage, and recurring navigation or docking problems. Some units also needed resets, repairs, or arrived with missing parts, so it is a better fit if you can live without lidar speed and want obstacle avoidance.

Common Questions (5)

  • The j7+ uses a camera instead of lidar, so it can avoid objects but may take longer and cover rooms less efficiently than lidar models. If you want faster, more systematic cleaning, a Roborock or other lidar robot is often preferred.

  • It can avoid objects with its camera and is designed to dodge pet waste, but it still can get stuck on straps, strings, and toys. Some owners report it successfully avoiding dog puke and poop, while others say it still gets lost or stuck several days a week.

  • On hard floors and mixed hardwood/linoleum, it can pick up most dog hair and dust in a single pass, but corners, edges, and throw rugs may still need a stick vac or sweeping. Some users say it performs well, while others say it misses a lot of material on hardwood with rugs.

  • At $150, it is considered a strong price if you already want an iRobot ecosystem with available bags, rollers, and batteries. It is less compelling if you are starting from scratch and want lidar-based navigation, faster coverage, or stronger long-term support.

  • Some units work for years, but others develop navigation problems such as spinning, stopping randomly, missing rooms, or failing to dock fully. App issues are also reported, including no real-time location updates and occasional reset needs.

I've had this several years from Costco. Works great. When it dies I'll go lidar but for $150 this is a steal.

Bought it last time, and switched to Roborock after trying this iRobot Roomba j7. It is pretty bad routing algorithm, and take a strange pattern in cleaning rooms. Do not buy it.

I've had this same unit for about 2 years. Works well, gets most of my dogs hair and dust off the hard floors on a single pass. Mixed carpet and hardwood/linoleum.
still break out the stick vac for corners and some edges.
never had an issue with it getting stuck.

battery life is about 65 minutes

Has avoided dog puke and poop on more than one occasion. Also, if it does run over some nasty stuff, contact them. They will replace it free of charge.

Even though it is self emptying, I'll stop it by pressing the button on top, and manually dump the dust bin, put it back in, press button let it continue. saves a few $$ on the bags but also lets me see how dirty things are.

I have 2 of these and like them good the modular parts. But make sure they haven't changed them to non-modular. When they were bought out, the new bots immediately became disposable crap.

I've purchased several of these j7+ and i7+ refurbished from deals just like this one for twice as much. I personally think they do a great job albeit they have to vacuum during the day to work effectively due to not having LIDAR. I am pretty sure that every single one of them has had an issue during the 2-year warranty period but was fine after being sent off for repair. Two of my i7+ robots that I purchased new are still going after almost 10 years.

If you are not aware, iRobot was taken over by their Chinese supply chain in lieu of debt payments after filing for bankruptcy. Supposedly they plan to continue operations but of course YMMV as to whether that will happen. You will also have to decide if you have any concern that maps of your house along with pictures of obstacles the robot "sees" are being sent to China.

I would also add that dealing with Allstate/SquareTrade has gotten significantly worse the last couple of years and I am not sure I would consider their warranty any sort of peace of mind. This is an amazing price at $150 if you are already in this ecosystem as there are significant 3rd party vacuum bags, roller brushes, batteries, etc. that can make operation of the vacuum pretty budget friendly. If I was starting from scratch I'd probably take the $150 and use it toward a different robot/company due to concerns with longer term support and security/privacy issues mentioned.

I bought this about 12 months ago and wish i had not. Often wont fully dock on the connectors, has had to be reset multiple times, came with parts that from the start showed they needed to be replaced, and the app doesnt show a real time update of where the vacuum is. Get a roborock instead.

Have this model. It's awful. Looks nice but isn't worth it even if it were free.
