Instead of watering the plants or soil directly to risk overwatering or underwatering, you refill the reservoir whenever it is empty. Not ideal for all plants and you still have to add water yourself.

I went in store this evening and got all those sizes. Also bottom dishes were on sale for $0.60 - $1.60 (for other planters that don't have it attached).
