I went in store this evening and got all those sizes. Also bottom dishes were on sale for $0.60 - $1.60 (for other planters that don't have it attached).

Doesn't that overexpose the roots to water and not letting it time to dry out?
The amount of water drawn from the capillary action is very little. How much moisture is retained in the plant compartment depends on the substrate medium used. As I already mentioned, not ideal for all types of plants.

Someone explain how self watering works
It has a wick that is directly connected to the bottom of the water basin and to the top touching the soil. Water has adhesion properties and can travel upwards along the wick. The soil will draw water due to concentration gradient: water will move from higher concentration (wick) to the lower concentration(soil). Please join me next time on Science is Magic.

Would this work for a goldfish. Like I wouldn't even have to add the water, it would do it by itself?
