This is a newer model, but my similar refurb MFCL2685DW has been flawless for 5 years. My only advice is to opt out of the auto-replenish toner program at setup. Otherwise I think this is a solid investment.

Oddly, my 2685 has been a piece of utter crap. It ghost prints all the time. It loses connection all the time. It decides to freeze all the time.
I got this refurbished printer last week, arrived in a few days and it looks new. Coming from a 15 year old inkjet printer, this one is great. Fast, great printing quality (b&w), and smaller than I thought.

I have an even older 2550 (no fax) and it's been bullet proof. Its basic and gets the job done.

In full disclosure I've never used the fax function on my 2685; scan to PDF and email is the way to go. I couldn't be happier with it. Goes to sleep between jobs for power savings but wakes right up automatically when it's time to print.

Thanks OP, have bought a brother monochrome laser in the past from your recommendations, pure workhorse.
Any recommendations for a brother color laser, would love to dump my old ricoh (PITA to set up and loses connection easily)

Thanks for your kind words. I have zero experience with color lasers, so I'm not much help there. Maybe some other SDers can chime in with some sage advice on a color laser recommendation.

Yeah, same for me. 4 years using mine and laser cartrige ink still at 70% lol. Of course I only print a label here and there and some documents. But with 4 ink printer I owned before this one my ink would dry and had to rebuy new cartrige.
