Product Description:
- The Cold Steel Trail Boss is compact enough to carry all day in your hand or strapped to your pack, yet tough enough for chores that would make a hatchet or tomahawk scream for mercy. Featuring a European style head with a 4" blade and a 4 1/2" cutting edge, it takes a big bite with every swing. Plus, it features a very sturdy, durable straight-grained American Hickory handle. In our extensive field-tests in the outback of Australia, the Trail Boss was used to chop kindling, clear roads and trails, to build blinds and even to chop down a fair sized tree! Head weight: 1lb 13 oz (not NATF legal). Total weight: 2lb 9.5 oz.

Link to WranglerStar youtube video endorsing this Trail Boss (there are many other youtube videos about this axe, I just think this one is brief and to the point) - https://youtube.com/shorts/VhFnkk...RHAENK
ALSO, and this seems to be very important, this Trail Boss is ONLY 27" long and the head ONLY weighs 1 lb, 13 oz. More commonly known as a Boys Axe or Camp Axe or Cruiser or Half Axe or Forest Axe and some other nicknames as well. If you are thinking this will be your primary wood splitting axe you will be SORELY disappointed!
Most axes in this range have a head weight from 1 1/2 lbs to 2 1/2 lbs and have a handle length of 24"-28". Comparing this axe to anything outside of those parameters is just not helpful/useful/applicable. These are lightweight axes at best and that is the only category they should properly be placed in.
There are MULTIPLE discussions on "reddit/Axecraft" about this Trail Boss. Here is just 1 of those discussions: https://www.reddit.com/r/Axecraft...came
For COMPARISON - American made, Council Tool for $62.15 shipped: https://www.harryepstei
For COMPARISON - here is a Swisstech Axe from Walmart ($49.97) that has been getting a lot of attention: https://www.walmart.com/ip/28IN-T...5baa59fe09
A HEAVIER option, but in the same pricing arena ($32.00) is this option from Harbor Freight: https://www.harborfreig
One pricier option, ($92) but made by an Amish family in Maine, is this Snow and Nealley axe: https://a.co/d/0hdLEFRG
Hope that helps a little bit. All the best to all you slickers out there! 😁

Community Reviews
The Cold Steel Trail Boss is a lightweight 27 inch camp and chopping axe that stands out for portability and fast, sharp cutting on kindling, small trees, and general campsite work. The straight-grained hickory handle and compact size make it easy to carry, and the head has held up for years in regular home and camping use when sharpened and used correctly. It is not a splitting axe, and the head geometry can get stuck in logs or even loosen if abused. At $35.99, it is still a decent deal, though not as compelling as the earlier $28 price.
The axe can bite into wood with minimal effort when used for its intended chopping role.
The compact 27-inch size makes the Trail Boss easier to carry for camping and backpack use.
The hickory handle can stay strong during home or semi-regular felling tasks when used correctly.
The axe can produce kindling from straight medium logs even though it is not a true splitting axe.
The head profile makes the axe a poor choice for splitting wood and logs.
The handle can fail after very limited use, including breaking after only a couple strikes.
The care instructions indicate hand washing only, which limits cleaning options like machine washing.
The price increase to $35.99 can make the deal less compelling than the earlier ~$28 level.

Using that word on a Slickdeals post when it isn't a price mistake is a mistake.
