Can I connect an Apple TV onto this so that the Fire system can be bypassed?
You should be able to do that. I use my fire TV the same way to connect to my android TV box. In fact I have never set up or connected my base fire TV OS to internet ever and I have had no issues. There is just one additional step after the TV is switched on to choose attached HDMI connection. in theory, apple TV should also work the same way. happy to be corrected
