But Amazon does not offer the $69/year Prime subscription to people on those eligible programs. You'd figure that people retired or on assistance would need it more than college students who are usually still under their parents' wing

Then tried and did Prime Student for 4½ years. Been on Regular Prime since(about 3 years).
Nothing has changed about my account during this entire time, except I guess, how it was labeled: regular non-Prime, Student Prime, regular Prime.
