Agreed that there are lower cost altenatives but the enamel tends to chip much more readily on these as well as stains forming. Le Creuset is, however, the gold standard. If you want to splurge, it is totally worth the upgrade pricing but, again, if not regularly used, the lower cost alternatives are a great second best.

I totally get BIFL but you can get Tramontia from Sam's and Costco at a fraction of this price and effectively can use the lifetime warranty and/or return it to the store for a new one anytime. I've had two for about 7 years now and other than some red staining from sauces they have been bullet-proof.

Ridiculously expensive, unless it cooks dinner for you.

That price is way to steep.

These are great, when you can find them at a thrift store for $8.

What makes these better than enameled cast iron from say...kohls...with a picture of Rachael Ray on it. Genuine question here. My cheap one that has close to 10 years under its belt has a couple dings in the rim but I don't have to worry about it because it costs a tenth of that this costs. Do these cook that much better? Do they chip less? What's the deal?

Agreed. My wife splurged and got me one for a birthday a few years back. It's nice but I don't feel like the price was justified. Especially because the cooking surface enamel has chipped off in 2 spots - 1 chip happened after like a year and the second happened just recently.

Supposedly they offer a lifetime replacement warranty, which helps justify the cost (a little bit) but then, when you try and make a claim, they just blame it on user error and say that the way you used the pot is not covered. So that's cool.

I feel like I would have been happier with something like a $40 Carote from Walmart...
