The 13 inch M4 MacBook Air at $700 stands out as a strong value for everyday use, especially for portability, battery life, and general school, office, web, and travel tasks. It is described as compact, fast enough for light photo work and even some 4K video editing, with Costco adding warranty coverage and a lower price than Apple or open box alternatives. The main tradeoff is the 256GB SSD, which can fill quickly once macOS and apps are installed, making 512GB more appealing for larger photo, music, or offline media libraries. It is a solid fit if you want a light Mac and can live with modest storage.

Common Questions (5)

  • The 13-inch M4 Air is the better value if you want portability and mostly do web, documents, streaming, and light work. Spend more for the 15-inch or M5 if you want more screen space, 512GB storage, better sustained performance, or a Pro-level display and speakers.

  • It is fine for basic users who mostly stream media and keep files in iCloud, but it fills up quickly if you store lots of photos, music, videos, or TV shows locally. macOS itself takes 30+GB, leaving a little over 200GB free, and upgrading later usually means using an external SSD or replacing the laptop.

  • Use the Costco app's warehouse inventory search with item code 1814012, and check nearby warehouses there too. The app can show the $699.97 price even when the floor tag still says $849, and some stores ring it up at checkout despite the shelf marker being outdated.

  • Yes, it is YMMV: some warehouses showed $699.97, while others were marked $849 or had no stock. Availability also changed quickly, with some stores having only a few units or selling out the same day.

  • At $700, the M4 Air is the stronger deal if you can stretch the budget, because it adds 8GB more RAM and a much better chip for about $100-$200 more depending on the comparison. The Neo only wins if your budget is closer to $500 and its 8GB/256GB configuration fully meets your needs.

but you're willing to spend the extra $200 more now?
If it mattered that much you'd hold out for another $500 deal but you know the probability of that happening in this current technology shortage environment its extremely unlikely.
Black friday deals are once a year and are intended to be out of the ordinary. If $500 is your baseline bottom dollar you may be mistaken. That's a anomaly, not the norm.
willing to spend the extra $200 now on M4 is understandable. But not agreeing and understanding the extra $150 for the M5 upgrade seems a little unreasonable.
You don't need to defend your choice, its understandable and it works for you. What I simply stated is if anyone needs more SSD and the newer M5 model there's a heck of a deal on open box m5 for only $150 more.
Once the sale ends on M5 and its back up to $1100 then this M4 deal looks alot better.
But as it stands right now, its only $150
m5 open box where

Have 3 options at my Costco, which one is the better deal?
1) $700 for 13" M4 16GB/256GB
2) $800 for 15" M3 16GB/512GB
3) $900 for 15" M4 16GB/256GB
Coming from PC, will be my first Apple laptop. No video editing or much gaming, will be use for basic tasks, email, word doc, spreadsheet, YouTube, web browsing. Rarely will need to travel with it, will mostly be used at home and have extra monitor to pair with it if needed. Not on a budget, have expendable funds, but is your typical Costco value oriented customer, just looking for the best value for my money

This or the 15 inch for 899? Don't need a lot of portability, mainly will stay at home on the desk.

Go cheaper, and buy an external monitor + keyboard + mouse/trackpad of your choice -- if you're not hauling it around, doesn't really matter.

My original plan was to use my iPad pro m4 in the matter you just described. I don't really need a computer for any kind of work I just enjoy general light usage. Wasn't even looking at MacBook until I saw this deal.

An "I"-pad is not a general use computer. Sure, it's gotten better in recent years, but it's not a replacement for a desktop (laptop) OS. Far from it. It's like saying an "E"-bike can be used instead of a SUV/sedan. Sure, in a lot of situations, especially if the infrastructure exists and situation is easy to handle, you can do very similar things -- like go to the bank, get a single bag of groceries, visit a friend a few miles away. The smaller option might even be objectively the better tool.

But you want to haul 2x cases of water, travel in the rain, or haul kids to soccer practice? No such luck without a proper vehicle. Same goes for a proper OS.

Any "influencer" who says they "got by" with just an "I"-pad....that only tells me they don't do all that much real/varied work.

Thanks for the feedback brother. Maybe I'll pick up that MacBook and give it a whirl. I do have 90 days to decide.

my 2 cents: with 2 kids, disk space is eventually more useful than cpu speed, with the exception of intel cpus. I think 512GB is more important and next to that is year of last support. With macs, they tend to last a long time and what ends up happening is the disk fills up before speed becomes an issue. So I would get something that has 512GB. With that logic, a 512GB neo will have longer utility than a 256GB M4. Of course this is a generalization and for some who need compute power, the M4 is faster. I am still using a 2017 12" Macbook Retina with i7, 16GB and 512GB for travel, and despite the lack of OS support, it is still usable and a fantastic form factor. I was wishing the neo would have the same form factor, but evidently the tradeoffs for a 2 pound laptop wasnt acceptable

1 or 3. The 15" screen might be nice for you, but the 13" is one of the most portable laptops you can buy.

My Costco still had the m4/ 256 in stock. Was on the fence about a Neo for my kiddos school laptop. This is a much better deal.

yes. very tricky. smoked (literally) my motherboard and trackpad. Had to get it professionally fixed, burned a diode. The battery replacement was tricky but doable, but reconnecting the trackpad with power connected (no choice) has little margin for error.

Would recommend paying somebody to do it.
