Added capability compared to phone/watch, like satellite weather reports, breadcrumb trail pings
Hardier than a phone or watch, this can take more of a beating and still function

Lastly, and IMO most importantly, the inreach does not require aiming. When using satellite connections with phones and watches, you have to angle the device in a specific direction and try to catch a satellite. The inreach has an omnidirectional antenna that will be able to send and receive as long as it has clear view to the sky. Why does this matter? There can be many emergency situations where you may be unable to maneuver your device to hit a satellite, for example being stuck in a tree well, falling into a crevasse, arm injury, lying on the ground, etc.
Obviously use your own judgement if any of those advantages apply to you, or if you're ok with your phone's connectivity. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. Also keep in mind the cheapest inreach plan is about $8 per month, you can suspend it for up to a year with no re-activation fee.

Satellite Texting doesn't work offshore in the ocean. I have tried this when first available so for communication purposes it's useless and still need Inreach or Starlink.
For Terrestrial usage the satellite text feature works fine
