The iPhone satellite messaging service you're all talking about is not comparable. Garmin InReach uses a much more robust satellite system called Iridium that can give you much better coverage without line of sight. Think about it this way: for people who do dangerous things in remote locations, being able to get satellite SOS through no matter the conditions is the difference between life and death.

If you've used iPhone's satellite messaging, you'll know it's spotty in even ideal conditions. Fine for sitting around a campground or standing atop a mountain peak to quickly let someone know your status. But I would NEVER count on it to save me or provide reliable service.

If you go to high risk places, it's a must-have. We have saved two individuals with these.

can these be hacked or used for slow internet access ? Any non starlink options for that for a cruise? Just need basic email access not streaming etc.

there are more differences between the 3 and 3 Plus than just the photo/voice messaging.

Price says $399
not $339

Unless your phone has starlink (which requires holding it up to the sky standing on one leg and crossing your eyes), this is a great communicator if you go off-grid for long hikes

Not sure how it compares with satellite texting on an iPhone via T-Mobile or whatever (not to be confused with cellular). Potentially redundant if you can already activate this service on your line (T-Mobile offers some plans an upsell of satellite SMS, photo sharing, and "select" app messaging via starlink or whatnot.) I don't have it activated, but a $400 standalone device for text only sounds off -- but maybe the battery life is incredible, etc.

FYI T-Mobile offers free 911 satellite text messaging to everyone including non T-Mobile customers (need unlocked phone). I turned the eSIM on hiking in Nevada when I didn't have a Mint signal and was able to successfully get a signal. https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage...ne-sign-up

I can't speak to the price, but I can speak very highly of the Inreach that was instrumental in saving my life. In remote areas, especially in the far north or south, these are well worth it.

I'm curious, with the satellite texting that iPhones have, how does this differentiate itself? I haven't used the iPhone feature yet so I don't know.
