10/10 good hard magic system. Soft magic is when Harry Potter randomly gets a magic spell that just happens to be perfect for the given moment. Hard magic is when magic follows scientific rules. It makes it feel real

Elantris is one of my favorites, if not my favorite, and mercifully can be read alone without having to invest in a 53-book series. Most of his books start sounding very similar to each other after a while—I read a ton of them but eventually started burning out.

You're not wrong. The more fleshed out a magic system gets the closer it gets to resembling a coding language. 😂

Love Brandon Sanderson and this series in particular. His works are great if you need an audiobook for your commute, they regularly hit 20+ hours for the same price as a shorter book. I know this isn't the audiobook version, but IIRC Alexa can read you kindle books as an "accessibility" feature and she's not terrible.

Sanderson gets a really mixed review from me. This book is the foundation of a long series, about 10 books/short stories all tied together. I enjoyed the second series much more than the first. One quirk I found in this first series is that he overexplains everything. He will repeat over and over how a given person's magic works. Without a doubt, you will understand it, but it removes any whimsical overtures you might add in - you're seeing exactly the same picture he does. In online criticism of his writing style, someone mentioned it was like reading an engineering instruction manual of fantasy.

That said, the story is freaking deep. The lore, as you're fed it constantly with a paddle spoon, is fully fleshed out. The second series is much more fun to read and avoid overly complex descriptions until the last maybe 50 pages of the final book, and that's needed to explain the conclusion in a satisfying way.

Long ago I accidentally pirated the mistborn start, I didn't even know I was pirating book at the time, somebody sent it to me or linked me and I assumed it was some sort of freely written story on the internet.

I'm glad I was able to pay listen to the reckoners series on Audible recently, Sanderson is pretty decent in most all story writing. The best thing is he is internally logical as much as one can expect.

He is trying to say whenever logic follows consistent internal logic. It doesn't make sense in our world, but it doesn't break its own rules.

I feel like AI could summarize the characters from each chapter, and then it could read all of the summaries, and then define character voices, and then it could just set a different voice from all the voices you can choose on the average ai, and amongst all of this it could produce a pretty impressive output.

I've read pretty much all his novels after I read the wheel of time. This was my first and probably my favorite.
