So it'll cost me a $1,000 to finally get a smartwatch that lasts two weeks on a single charge?

You can get an older version, Epix Pro, for less than 500. It lasts about 20-22 days for me.

The great thing about this. Is the fact that you don't have to buy it.

Never let anyone say out loud that you have nothing useful to add.
We'll just think and write it instead.

I've thought about picking up an Instinct 3 which runs around $300 days. What I actually want is a plain analog watch that lasts months but has NFC payments. I don't care how many steps I walk. I don't need notifications. My Samsungs have never lasted more than a day and half even with all the smart stuff turned off. I stopped wearing my Galaxy Watch 8.

you would be out of your mind to spend $1000 on a Garmin these days

their development has steadily gone downhill since 2020

it is really really bad now, many bugs, very long to ever fix things

FenixE is half the price and has 90% of the features of the 8

but I wouldn't even spend $500 these days on a Garmin

just wait for a half priced factory refurb if you must get a Garmin

many other brands are finally getting their act together with features and software development for a fraction of the price

They think they had some sort of alien technology. LMAO! Their products are decent but not $1000 good. All their watches will drop to 250-500 range after 1 year or so. So let them sit on the market for a few months and get their bubble busted on their own!

Face it - sensor tech is getting steadily commoditized. At this point all 4 major vendors have more or less same set of sensors and signals and their precision is more than enough for 99.9% of people.

Which leads to the question what the next frontier is. I believe, it is the ability to provide comprehensive coaching. Which is the game Google (after many false starts) is finally getting very good at. Their AI shines at that and it is only getting better (unless they mess it up again).

Have a Fenix 7X. Doesn't have all the latest features but still 100% a great watch. Can't get lost with it/maps everywhere, has the flashlight, stays charged for weeks/includes solar refresh charge ring, has worldwide golf course and trail maps, and was the best under $1k purchase I've made in the past 5 years. Won't replace it until it absolutely dies - upgrade-itis isn't my thing. BTW, it's not a smartwatch, and that's what makes it's battery last.

Don't forget that at least part of this is due to the move to a consolidated platform for their newer watches, which has caused some growing pains. On the rest of the complaints, like charging for Connect+ and significantly increasing prices, they do seem to be out of touch somewhat.

btw they just released the Forerunner 170 yesterday which has like 90% of the features of the Fenix8 and it's under $200

again, Garmin is not a horrible brand but spending $1000 on a Garmin is failing an IQ test

supposedly Fenix9 is going to be released by end of 2026 which would really bring prices down on the 8 to maybe half but I don't see how they are going to do that with global prices and cost of living skyrocketing

btw the Fenix7 series has twice the RAM of the Fenix8 series but the one thing the Fenix8 series has going for it is that it can run four CIQ datafields at the same time, all previous Garmin models can only run two, which for advanced users is annoying

however even the FenixE can run four CIQ at the same time and that's going to be under $400 for sure by end of 2026

Some good deals to be had on the Fenix 7 Pro around, just got one brand new for $300 this week. Not worth the extra $500-700 for the 8.
