I thought "marinized" and "dive rated" meant it was going to be a smart diving watch, but it's only 40 meters. Some other cool features though like chart plotting etc.

I asked Gemini what this is. The Garmin Quatix 8 is definitely a "niche" beast, and if you aren't docking a boat every weekend, it's basically an overpriced Fenix with a blue strap. You're right—it's expensive, and for most people, an Apple Watch Ultra looks "cooler" at a better price point.
However, it exists because of some very specific proprietary hardware and software hooks that Apple doesn't offer:
1. The "Remote Control" for Boats

The biggest "why" is integration. If you have a Garmin chartplotter or autopilot system on a boat, this watch becomes a remote control on your wrist.
  • Autopilot Control: You can literally change the boat's heading or engage pattern steering from the watch.
