Community Reviews
This Craftsman 256 piece mechanics set looks best as a basic starter kit for home, garage, or truck use, with the 2 drawer box making it easier to store and carry than bulkier cases. The assortment covers most typical home mechanic jobs, and the lifetime warranty and long history of Craftsman tools add reassurance. The main limits are that much of the count is specialty bits and hex keys, the largest socket tops out at 21 mm, and it is not Versastack compatible. It is a practical everyday set if you do not need a full no skip socket lineup.
Common Questions (5)
If you only need a basic set, this kit is enough for many home jobs. If you work on your own vehicles or equipment regularly, a no-skip socket set is the better upgrade because this set leaves out some larger sizes and more complete coverage.
It works well as a basic starter set for normal home-owner, backyard-mechanic, or truck use. The 2-drawer/tackle-box style is also more convenient than bulkier box-shaped kits for carrying and storage.
No, it is a very basic socket tool set rather than an all-in-one toolbox. A large share of the 256 pieces are specialty bits, hex keys, and nut bits, and the largest socket is 21mm.
The lifetime guarantee is still considered one of the set's biggest strengths, and older Craftsman tools are still being used daily decades later. Current quality may not match older Made-in-USA sets, but the warranty makes the value easier to justify.
No, this kit is not VersaStack compatible. It uses its own 2-drawer toolbox style instead.

Considering the massive inflation, this set is a great price at $99.
People have accepted that unless you're going to pay Snap On or Matco pricing these days, your tools are going to be made in China, and that's perfectly fine considering most tools carry a lifetime warranty nowadays.
Everything has dropped in quality in recent years with cost cutting and outsourcing.
Personally, I only use HF rachets though. Addicted to the rubber handle. Hurts my fingers with bare metal nowadays.

I don't remember having to use larger than a 19mm like ever except on an axle nut. I got the impact socket for my car for $3 from HF.
